I am having trouble with the rear car motor. I have tried running it with just the engine car, it does start up then within a few seconds dies. Removed the shell and don't see any broken or loose wires. I have had this Zephyr for years and it has always been a great runner. It does not have proto sound.
Anyone familiar with this problem?

I had the same problem. I simply took out the rear motor. If you have the booklet that came with this set, it details resetting the engine back to factory defaults. It can be a pain but after about 23 years mine is still running. Good luck to you.
Does it run OK without the rear car with motor attached ?
There is nothing to reset if it is a non-proto sound version,
If not the motor in the front could be bad and need to be replaced
you could swap motors to see if that solves the problems, they should be the same type.
Yes, the front motor is fine.
If there is soldering involved, I'm not good at that, so swapping motors might not be practical for me.

What does start up and die mean? The whole engine or just the rear motor? Power is transmitted via harness and a PCB trace on the front. So you can check that for damage. G
Mine had the same problem. One of the wiring harnesses in a passenger car was too tight and became damaged. Got a new one from MTH and replaced it. I don't know if they have them anymore. The set should run wellrun well if you take the rear motor out.

I've decided to remove the rear motor, just hoping I can do it without causing any rear truck damage. I think that on level surface the Zephyr will perform just fine. Wondering why there was a rear motor?
