I am aware that some have said that the MTH Premier 5000 Class engines have a boiler that is slightly smaller in diameter than it should be prototypically speaking and that the 2900 class is slightly larger than it should be prototypically.  I also heard that MTH used the same boiler for both engines.

So do the 2 MTH engines use identical boilers?  Did these engines have identical boilers in real life?  Finally, if they're using identical boilers, is the Northern using the Texas boiler, or is the Texas using a Northern boiler and how does this affect their 1:48 aspects?

Thanks,

Adam

FWIW, I did a little research into these 2 locos - the real ones - a while back, because I had heard that MTH used the same boiler for both, and I presumed that their 2-10-4 was too short. All I can say is that the 2 actual locos (not including tenders) were the same length - probably their tenders were, too (ATSF was big on standardization, as were many/most major steam roads).

I am not sure about the girth, unfortunately.

Looking at photos of the prototypes reveals boilers that were almost the same in small ways, too - typical Santa Fe-practice big steam. So, while the Pickers of Nit (sometimes I'm one) will find differences, ATSF essentially used the same boiler, so why shouldn't MTH?

Hello D500, guys and gals

I would believe the class 5011 VS. class 2900, The 5011 is 3 feet longer than the 2900's due to extra 74 inch driver.  I had the MTH #20-3056-1 # 5012 which uses the same boiler as the one use on the MTH's 2900 class 4-8-4 (don't remember the # off hand) and the Northern's boiler looked smaller on the 2-10-4 chassis as I noticed that when I purchased the Sunset 3rd S.F. 5011 class 2-10-4 and the boiler is larger bigger in dia.  Then looking at the MTH's boiler on the 2-10-4's it looked wrong !!!  I sold the MTH #5012  10 years ago, then in 2012 bought the Sunset model. The differences is huge between the boilers of MTH's and Sunset 3rd (never mind the piping etc) but look at the boiler size and shape of it.  The S.F. class 5011 is my favorite engine and so I would know the differences !!!   It is too bad that MTH didn't make the correct boiler for the 2-10-4 as I would have kelp that one too.

From the schematics I have: (5011 Class Texas has 104" boiler diameter and total length of 66' 3"); (2900 Class Northern has 102" boiler diameter and 64' 5" total length).

So in 1:48 the boiler diameter difference would be .042 inches and engine length would be .458 inches.

I don't think I would mind or be able to notice a boiler diameter difference of .042", but I believe one could definitely distinguish a .458 difference in length as it is just shy of half an inch.

I started the topic because I have 2 Premier 5012 units I doublehead and am thinking of ordering the new 2926.  Like any modeler, I want to run them together and enjoy their beauty in TRUE 1:48.

As Always,

Thanks
