The MTH website says the overrall length of 20-3156-1 is 30" and the box says 32.25" - I assume this measured over couplers.
A similar 2-10-4 (20-3161-1) is listed as 33.25" long.
Can someone who has one of these tell me the actual wheelbase?

I've got one. I can measure. By wheelbase, what do you mean? Wheelbase of the driver set, of the loco itself (from front pilot axle to rearmost? Or of the train, from front pilot axle to rearmost tender axle?

20-3156-1 is a 4-4-0 produced in 2005. I think you are thinking of 20-3056-1. Here it is:
