Are there any advantages to buying a newer MTH Z-4000, say less than a year old to buying an old one, say 10 years old. I know the obvious, one is newer than the other. I am looking for info on: What design changes were incorporated from say 10 to 12 years ago vs today? Are they more compatible with PS2 and PS3? Please advise.

I do not believe the Z4K has changed in any way, as far as engineering.
There is no Z4k-A or Z4K-1.

They probably have updated the electronics. There was also a problem with some of the older ones where a handle all the way down might not get you zero volts on the track.
It would be nice if the Z4K remote was standard on both handles and not an add-on.
