I am having repeated problems creating MU consists using MTH PS-3 NKP F-7s, GP-7s and RS-11s. I have done this for years with PS-2 diesels with no problems including three powered SP Tunnel Motors with my heavy beet train and three powered SR SD units powering a lengthy consist of auto parts 60 ft boxcars on the "Sparkplug." All units run fine (lead, mid-train [Locotrol on SR], and swing helpers) on 2% grades.

I have carefully followed the instructions in the NKP PS-3 F-7 Manual to ensure the settings are right for the trailing F-7. But the problem I'm encountering is the same for all the PS-3 diesels: I set up the "Lash Up" on a controller but when I apply voltage only the "rear" unit tries to move, and in the wrong direction. The "lead unit" is cold, dark and quiet. This has occurred multiple times on my NKP F-7s (A-A) and pairs of NKP GP-7s and RS-11s.

My layout uses three 4000s, three TIUs and four controllers. The layout is in "Command" mode so I can run any train anywhere with any controller. I normally run four at once on a double-track main with another train on the branchline and one working the yard. Because I like long trains on the main lines I prefer all my diesels to be double-headed (at least). But it's not working for any PS-3 diesels.

I've swiped shells on NKP Demonstrator F-7 #801 with a WM F-7A non-powered unit so I still have a protypically correct A-A consist on NKP's CB-2, but I consider that only a temporary solution. (Just put the NKP S-2 back on the train where it belongs says a steam-loving neighbor/model railroader!)

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.   Rick

What version of DCS is loaded into each TIU and remote? (older versions had bugs)

When you state you apply voltage, what exactly do you mean???

You are using DCS and not DCC right?

Have you tried using just one TIU (TIU #1) connected to a test track to see if your system works correctly there?

It really sounds like you maybe doing something wrong with your procedure if all else is right. I run large consists all the time without issues. DCS 6.1 works well for that. A simple mistake will cause all types of issues. Poor signal at the rails when multiple engines are drawing power will too. Usually that's from bad wiring. The power dips as the draw goes up. One engine is fine but several shows these symptoms. That's why you test on a short piece of track to troubleshoot your issue.
