My Alaskian Adventure via trains, planes, buses, and ships

Hi everyone. Just got home from one of my bucket list wish list items. My wife and I along with 6 other family members took a 11 day tour of Alaska taking in many side tours. We started out in Vancouver via a cruise ship and ended in Fairbanks via bus and a scenic train. We took several side tours including other train rides thru some beautiful country. Just amazing how little snow there is this time of the year and how high the temperatures are.

Anyhow see below several train related photos we took along the way including some of the trains we rode along with others we saw during the trip. Of course, being a Bridge guy, I photographed several bridges also.

Hi Jim,

Can't beat a vacation like that one. I lived in Juneau and would take my 2 sons and hike the White Pass tracks from Skagway to Lake Bennett, this is before they started to run trains on the tracks, early 1980's. Glad you and your wife had a nice trip.

Sounds like a dream trip.

My wife and I hoping to do similar trip in about 5 years.

How was the cruise part?

Any issues with mosquitoes in Alaska?

Did you book trains ahead of time...were they day excursions or overnights?

We all took a family Alaska cruise, in early June of 2012. Luckily it was cool enough, so that the BIG mosquitoes were not out yet. More than one of the locals in down town Skagway stated, that do to the high wind, the mosquitoes could not attack us!

Thanks Jim. I rode the White Pass & Yukon in 2003. Also rode the Alaskan RR to Denali Park and lodge. Our cruise was from Seward to Vancouver. So we also rode the cruise train to the Celebrity ship. Your pictures brought back memories of a wonderful trip.

Thanks for the report Jim. We took the 7 day Alaskian cruise out of Vancouver up the inland route. With out a doubt the most breath taking landscape I've ever seen. We're going to do the ship/train package in 2 yrs. Can't wait.

Hi Jim, Thanks for posting your pictures, you look like you may have had some luck with mother nature in late July/ August. Top it off you rode old #69. That's my plan next time around.
