It is hard to believe it has been that long.  After studying the Lynn Westcott book on L-Girder bench work for about a year, I was ready to start.  I used all L-Girder bench work covered with 5/8 plywood then covered that with 1/2 inch Homosote that was glued and screwed.   I had the bench work done and the first main line ready to run a train Christmas eve 1982.  The first train to run was my Eliot Welz Metroliner.  I still have that train.  My goal was to have a toy train layout with tubular track.  I started with old Lionel switches and soon replaced them with K-Line.  Later those were replaced with Ross switches.  My goal was to run Pennsylvania and New York Central equipment.    We all know how long that lasts.  At this time, Williams and Weaver were making beautiful scale trains and I was in for all roadnames.

I was in TCA and TTOS at this time.  My layout first appeared in OGR in 1991.  It has been in many magazines over the years and I have hosted TCA and Lots convention tours.  In the early 90's,Lionel used my layout to test a new thing they called TMCC.  When TMCC was ready to be released, Barry Lewis and I did an article for OGR on what TMCC is.  Years later, Mike Wolf used my layout for testing of DCS.  Early on in testing, MTH did not have the handheld made at that point and we had a photo of a handheld on a laptop with a touch screen and that is how we ran DCS.  Yes, trains ran by a computer back then.  My layout is a buss wired common ground layout and Mike Wolf told me to tear out all my wiring and do it his way.  I told him I would make it work and I did.  Barry and I had the job to find out how it works and have an article ready for OGR when DCS hit the market.  We were ready and did so.  It was on my layout that the (now known as) magic light bulb signal assist was discovered.  I still have that same tester with the same 18 volt bulb.  I plan on presenting it Barry Broskowitz this October at York.  He has done so much for all of us, I feel he should have it.

In later years, my layout is still a toy train layout but I run scale trains only.  Mostly MTH and I do run some Lionel.  I do like Legacy.  About 14 years ago I installed live catenary using Marklin wire and home made poles.  I wanted the poles to look like something Lionel might have made in the 50's.  Today the layout has TMCC, Legacy and DCS.  The one thing I demand is perfect operation.  I have that.

I am thankful for all the great friends I have made and all the great people who have visited my layout.  It has been a great run and last October while at York I got health news that I thought was going to pull down the final curtain.  I am up and running and hope to have more years with great train friends.  Anyone who finds themselves in my area is always welcome to stop by.   Below are just a few of my friends who have signed my wall.

Happy Birthday to Marty's layout. And thank you Marty and Dotty for being such great friends. It is an honor to have my signature on your wall.

I got back into trains about 20 years ago. While I enjoy the trains, the best thing about this hobby is the people who are in it and the relationships that you make as you participate in the hobby. To me, this hobby (as any hobby should be) is all about enjoyment.

I feel very fortunate to have met and become friends with Marty and Dotty and people like them who are just great people. I also give thanks to the OGR Forum for helping me do this.

We can debate the future of the hobby, DCS v Legacy, the merits of different types of track, scale v. toylike, etc., the truth is that we are bound together by this hobby and our attraction to it more than we are differentiated by the differences we have. And we are VERY FORTUNATE to have Marty and people like Marty who are just so very helpful on this Forum.

I wish you all a great 4th of July.

Gerry

I extend my congrats to you Marty!!  I first met Marty here on the forum when I purchased a GG-1 from him.  It was exactly as he described as have been the other purchases I have made from him since.  He is a stand up guy...a man of his word!  While I still have yet to meet him, Dotty, and Ralph in person, I feel as though I know them as part of our "family" here on the OGR forum.  Marty is always willing to extend a helping hand and represents everything good in our hobby.  We are so proud to have him, Dotty, AND Ralph as members of our Mid America 3-Railers!!

Marty...may you have another 31 years and more with your beautiful layout!!  Hopefully one day I will have the honor of signing that wall...

Marty - always enjoyed your layout, especially the work that went into the catenary and the flawless operation of the catenary, track and trains. 31 years is a huge milestone. Hopefully one day I'll take you up one your long time offer of welcoming forum members to see it! Thanks for sharing the ride with us.

Congratulations to Marty and Dotty! You all are great contributing members of this forum and enthusiastic promoters of this hobby. Your kind words and helpful suggestions are appreciated by thousands of model railroaders worldwide. May all your efforts, fun, and passion continue for another 31 years!

Very impressive milestone, Marty. You followed your dream layout to perfection. Congratulations on this anniversary! I also thank you for posting a brief reminder of your recent health issues. I hope that all who read this story will use Marty's message as a reminder to have your PSA checked annually. It could very well save your life.

Hi Marty,

Happy birthday to a beautiful layout, which I was lucky enough to see in person.

Marty's layout is the type of layout with tons of action, everywhere you look there's something going on. So many scene's tell wonderful story's. Ralph the cat will walk right through these scene's without touching a single item on the layout.

Congratulations, Marty,Dotty, and Ralph

You guy's are wonderful people, and great friends

Thanks, Alex

I can only imagine the many changes your layout experienced. I hope you took pictures, Marty.

In addition to the changes you mentioned, like changing the switches and installing the catenary, would you share w/ us some of the significant changes to the physical layout itself (total acerage expansions; shapes and directions the platform took into the spaces available, for example,) including its scenery, that you made?

FrankM

This is a very interesting thread, sir.

 Hi Marty,

It certainly was nice meeting and talking with you and Dotty at April York this year.

Glad to hear that you're 'in the clear' too!

A word of advice if I may - best you bar those two 'urban clowns' with the spray cans from your  layout room before they cover it with graffitti...

I still have my December 1991 issue of O Gauge Railroading showing Marty's layout full of Madison coaches.  Hard to believe that almost all if not all the locomotives and cars in that fabulous article have moved on to other homes.  I've known Marty for more than 20 years.  There are "takers" and "givers" in this world--Marty is one the great "givers".It would take a complete article to document all the help he's given me over the years building and improving my layout.  I'd like to share with the Forum a few photos I took about 10 years ago when my grandson paid a visit to Marty's layout.  Included in the selection are photos of photos being taken for a magazine article.

Thanks Marty and Dotty.  Lew Schneider

Congrats on the Layout's Birthday and a hearty "Thank You, God" for your health coming back around.

I've been to your layout once and was quite impressed.

Running my Big Boy on your DCS system convinced me that was the way to go.

My layout is still in the ugly track in a crappy basement category, but you and Dotty are welcome any time.

PS Let me know if you plan on getting up to NH and I'll move stuff to make it easier to get around the layout. It's a mess down there right now.
