I can't add any engines - the TIU and remote work fine - but when I connect the wifi module the TIU light blinks purple - i checked the network as the MTH-DCS and the switch is on MTH not home - I keep getting time out error messages - any ideas?

Most likely, your DCS App version is either 1.1 or 1.2, however, your WIU firmware is not version 1.1. That would explain the issue that you're experiencing. You need to update your WIU firmware to version 1.1.

Where is the update for the wiu unit? I have updated the tiu unit to 5.0 but my tiu light keeps blinking purple and I am unable to add a train. I do not have a remote. Any help is much appreciated.

the TIU is 6.1! ( and remote)
If the TIU software is still at 5.0, you are still going to have problems.
Everything Joe said plus, make sure your Wi-Fi has firmware 1.1.
Perfect thank you. One more question. When I try and download anything passed the 5.0 upgrade it asks me to unzip a file and won’t let me get past this point. Any suggestions?
Yes, then unzip it first! You could save it to the desktop so it's easy to find.
Some things in this hobby have to be learned. Computers are a part of it now. I try to keep up myself. It is difficult. I watch our grandson get his hands on a device and go thru it like he's been trained for it. It lets me know just how old I really am now. 
Another question. It says unable to continue no serial ports detected. Any ideas?
you may need to update your device's drivers?
What is the device or computer you are using? what type of windows? etc.
What exactly are you doing? What are you running when you get this? DCS loader?
Great thanks. The files are all downloaded and up to date but I’m still getting a blinking purple tiu light and it will not add any engines. I’m thinking I might need to contact dcs.
