Just got a decent used "Protosound-1" (as we unofficially say) UP 3-unit "Super Turbine" - the 8500-hp version; cab #5. It runs (first time I have run something in conventional - and using my Powermaster - in so, so long) as well as...PS1 (QSI) runs. It cries out for ERR Cruise Commander and RS. The PS1 "turbine sound" is pretty much just white noise. 4 motors - yessir.

The loco is beautiful, but all those cast-in grab irons and the bright, bare bulb in the cab really date the piece. It's 1996 all over again. I find the detailing to be acceptable, however, and lighting can be modified to a more subtle scheme - the headlight is burned out, anyway. (This thing was $999 in 1996 - really; I paid about a quarter of that - and in little 2016 dollars.)

So - if I ever get there - ERR Cruise Commander is in order...and I mentioned Railsounds. Problem is, there are no gas turbine RS available from ERR...but there is a steam turbine chip to be had. I listened to it online. Now, turbines make very similar sounds regardless of what hot gasses are being exhausted, and if I stay away from the "horn" (it's a steam whistle) it would be plausible.

One day. These are weighty matters in our little world.

(If MTH ever decides to re-visit this loco in the current era, some - not a lot - of re-tooling would be needing to get a real price for it; I don't really mind the cast-in grab irons, for example, but many out there do - unless they want to offer the biggest RailKing Scale loco yet.)

Yes, I have upgraded several of my MTH PS1 engines to ERR Command and Railsounds, all to the better, naturally.  I like the details, types and running of my early MTH Premier engines, and the upgrade to TMCC/RS is fantastic.  Now, as with others, I have several of the nice U.P. turbines (went on a type collection binge in the late '90s for them) and have not upgraded, yet, due to the issue of losing the "turbine sounds".  Have taken a look into the Digital Dynamics and TAS boards that made use of the QSI chips, but not easy to locate, and found they not all seemed to work the best.  So...... should anyone, (hearing this Ken @ERR?) produce a TMCC/RS upgrade that used the original QSI chip, or very close and correct sounds, they customer base purchasing these will surprise, and surpass, many expectations.  Myself, I would be in for acquiring minimum of six, probably more.

Yes, I also like the MTH PS2/3 engines, have several of those, also.  However, I do not wish to have the expense and addition of going to full MTH DCS control.  I do run my PS2/3 engines with my Cab1, using aux/9.  But, that is a conventional control, albeit with use of the cab1.  I prefer to remain with use of only one system, and have over 30 engines in Command Control, to date, and the number is always becoming greater with each upgrade to ERR products.  But, for me, it is not the control system in question, that is established, simply a proper manner of maintaining the favored original turbine sounds for the engines when doing the ERR upgrade.

"MTH has issued several turbines in PS2/3.  The conversion is not any more difficult than TMCC and the sounds are terrific!  I converted my Big Blow using the sound file from a propane turbine and I love it.

Yeah...I know - a friend has the PS2 MTH Propane version, and the sound is nice - better than my Lionel Veranda's sound (too much auxiliary diesel there). But, I like ERR's performance and easy installation (built-in cruise in the Cruise Commander), and seldom run any MTH locos, even though I have a Remote Commander. I almost always pick up the CAB-1 (love my TMCC) and go that way.

Still - if I ever get to it I will consider an MTH upgrade.
