What is the purpose in having the small "narrow gauge couplers" that look like ho as opposed to using Kadee O gauge couplers? Did narrow gauge railroads actually use smaller couplers than the standard Janney-MCB?

Some did; some didn't.
Most of my rolling stock is On3 that runs on On30 track. The only Bachmann rolling stock I run are 12 of their hoppers, 6 cabeese, and a baggage car. I installed Kadee On3 couplers (at On3 height) on everything - looks and operates better, IMO
Thank you for the feedback everyone, I will go with the narrow gauge couplers
Here are some photos showing the difference between B'mann HO couplers and Kadee ON3 couplers at On3 height:
Pete,
In your picture of the facing engines, I assume (bad idea??) that the HO size coupler is on the left. But in your picture of the two railcars, I honestly can't tell which is the HO coupler. Is the actual size difference between the HO and the On3 couplers as disparate as the engine picture makes it out to be?

Chuck,
My bad...the only HO coupler shown is on the left locomotive. You can clearly see the coupler's size and height difference.
I showed the freight cars so you could see what some B'mann cars look like with the Kadee's at On3 height. Should have said that.
Thanks for catching!
I've found that with non-Bachmann cars on Wiseman trucks I need to put shims between the mount and the draft gear box to lower it to the height of the couplers on Bachmann locos.........
The Kadee 803 couplers do not work particularly with the Bachmann On30 couplers. Any suggestions as which kadee to use to replace the Bachmann couplers as the 803 doesnt fit well in the draft box.
You need to replace the B'mann box with a Kadee 803 box if you want to use the 803 couplers,
Thank you Pete
As Pete wrote, I run my On30 DRGW/RGS stuff with On3 coupler height. The Kadee On3 couplers work pretty well. I even replace the Accucraft/AMS couplers with Kadee. And, step by step, replace some with the San Juan Evolution Couplers. They look great, they can´t loose their coupler springs. And they are a bit beefed up - fitting for Rio Grande/RGS.
Kind regards
Tom
