Going to build my 8 year old nephew a 4x8 layout . I have 027 and 042 tubular Lionel track, plenty of 027 and 042 switches , uncouple track, plastic trussel pieces, ...looking for a plan that he won't get bored with. Also when making the table...should I put down 1/2 plywood and then a sheet of homesote or can I skip the plywood ??? Thanks !!!

Definitely want to use plywood under Homasote, it has no structural strength and you'll break it easily if not supported some how.
Just be sure to screw down the track with screws that will only go into the Homasote, if they go into the plywood underneath it will transmit the trains running noise to the wood and it will sound even louder.

A figure 8 and a tunnel are always a hit with kids, especially the tunnel, makes the train seem like it "went somewhere" even if out of sight for only a second. A bridge is always popular too.

Hi Nessmuck,
Here's a flat from the 1954 Lionel Manual ,p.46, o gauge pieces and switches. SCARM file and manual attached. yard, figure 8, 8 allows reversing direction. Fits on a 4' x 8'.
Too bad we are so far apart. I have a 4' x 8' platform w/homosote that I would give to you.
Have fun!

I started with a 4\8 sheet of ply wood with a circle and 5 more years and now I got a 15 foot by 27 foot room filled with it and walking room so good luck it will never stay that way.
