Go to the Dollar Store and get hair "rubber" bands. Same stuff in different sizes and colors.

I use these bands with split fishing anchors to secure loads. Cut the band to length and crimp the round sinkers under the car at the ends.
If you are talking postwar, there were three different length circular bands and the one straight band with metal ends for the reel car. I think Jeff Kane, the Train Tender, has all of them.

I do the same thing, but I use small springs.

BMT - Thank you for putting a name on this item and thank you all for your unexpected replies. The depth of thought of forum members never ceases to amaze me. While I hate to use this cliché, so many members think outside the box. Their approach to a problem/situation, in most cases, is something that would not occur to me. And there are several examples in this thread!
i would 3D print a band that matches the shape of the load and clips into the flat car.
