First add a layer of plaster over the plaster cloth or enhance with plaster rocks,  you don't want the grain of the cloth fabric to show through.

Make a small sample area where you can test the color.  Start with the 16:1 ratio and start mixing keeping it on the lighter side and dab in on. you can always re-apply with a bit darker mixture later if so desired. Also dab some streaks of Yellow Ochre and Brown  then over wash with a gray tone. The colors blend in really well

Have fun

I tried using this stuff last night, I am not a fan. Unless you want to see through it, you need to use it pretty close to full strength.  Highly diluted, it runs everywhere and doesn’t cover anything.  I thought it would have soaked into raw plaster a lot quicker than it actually did.  Maybe you’ll have better luck, I ended up washing over the mess it made with India ink then 4:1 diluted brown acrylic paint.

There are several different products.  Drywall joint compound can be good and bad.  Standard stuff, when applied thick, more than 1/4" tends to dry very slow, sometimes not at all.  Looking closely on the shelves at the big box stores, there are joint compound dry mixes with a specific set time.  (90 minutes) works well for me.    Some of this detail was done with plaster cloth and drywall compound.
