Hi,

I'm new to the forum and to collecting trains.  I wanted to get more into it; but, I need some help and suggestions on troubleshooting and getting my K-Line Diesel up and running with my TMCC Trainmaster Command Set.  I purchased a brand new still in the wrapper K-Line K-28351, IC E-9 A-B-A w/Lionel RailSounds & TMCC.  All three units have motors and there are cables that connect each unit together.

I already had a MTH Z-1000 transformer (100 watts) that works fine.  Of course, I was impatient and couldn't wait to get started; so, I put my brand new engine on the track to check it out.  When it started up the first time, I could hear the train sounds; but, they stopped after I put the engine into forward and ran it.

I was able to acquire a used Lionel Command Base with a Cab-1 Controller from Trainz.com.  I watched the tutorial on Lionel.com that shows them hooking up the command base directly to the U-lead on the track with a ZW 275 transformer, turning the transformer up to the max voltage and using the Cab 1 to run the engine.  I hooked up my Z-1000 with the Command base in the same manner.

The Train is now running with the Cab 1 Controller.  I can sound the horn, whistle, control throttle and control direction.  However, I don't hear all of the Trainmaster sounds.  Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.  There are no batteries to replace inside any of the engines that I can find.

BigRedOne:  Sounds like you may have "Kicked" the Sounds - No Sounds switch into the signal sounds only position. That woul;d give you the horn and bell as well as still allow you train control. In some instances, the switch is located near the truck sdieframes and can easily be nudged into the opposite position when handling the loco off the track. Hope that helps, Dennis M.

I was going to add that to my recommendation, but he said when he first started it he had the Sounds, but when he changed direction the sounds stopped.  The signal sounds switch turns off the diesel sounds completely.

Since this is old stock there is a chance it was jostled and something is loose inside.  G

Had similar problems with Kline GG1 with Tmcc.  Found out that to start up the engine you need to press eng # AUX1 to wake up.  When you are done running the engine, you need to wait a half minute til diesel sound drop to idle, then press AUX1 5.  This

command shuts down railsounds in correct manner.  Failing to do this is like shutting off the power to your computer without going thru shutdown.  Confuses the programming and will hamper efforts to start the engine next session.  If this happens, you can try AUX1 3.  This command should reset and restart full railsounds.

Thanks for everyone's help.  I read the K-line document again in more detail; and, I missed a part where there is a 9v battery in the A-unit.  The battery plug was wrapped in tape, so that is why I missed it the first time.  I increased the volume on the sound pot; and,  I also found the signal sounds switch and moved it back to RS for Rail Sounds - thx GGG for both recommendations.  I didn't see any loose connections inside the unit; but, I found I have a short in the track that is not noticeable when you run Thomas the Tank Engine, which definitely affects the big e9 three engine machine.  After making those changes and fixing the short, I got some sound, it was great.  I'm going to put it up until I get a bigger and more stable track built.  icfan, I think that the 100watts is barely enough to run the three locomotives; but, it would not handle any more.  My plans are to get a Z4000 and a DCS Control unit to add to my bigger track that I'm planning.  I'm glad that I found this Command Base and Cab 1 unit; because, people are trying to sell them at a premium now.  It works and will work for any old trains that I purchase.  I plan on purchasing MTH locomotives going forward.

I mainly put up this smaller track to get my 3 yr old introduced to trains with something that he can tear up without me getting too upset.  It was actually a used K-line IC Fast Freight that was not complete and I got it fairly cheap.  The Snap track is crap, though.

Interesting...I also just bought the same set off "bay and received it yesterday. The instructions don't have any diagrams as to the location of the "switches". I found the program/run switch but not the RS/SS switch. There is a switch just behind one of the fuel tanks that is not labled...the slide part of the switch is recessed...could this be the RS/SS switch???

Can you use a rechargable Nicad battery in place of the alkaline battery.

I'm running my units with a Z-4000 so I haven't experienced any low power problems so far.

Also figured out in order to run in conventional mode, I have to shut off the off the Cab-1 base...maybe because I am running through Lionel TPC 300's.

I had a different K-Line A-B-A set, the Milwaukee Road set.  The trailing locomotives had motors, but no electronics.  You can add electronics and MU them, but if they're the same as mine, they don't have anything to control the motors in the other engines, just bare motors.

Hey Big Red,

Have you trie to remove the weather hatch covers that are over the roof exhaust fans? Apparently they are removable, but seem they are "on" pretty tight.

Gunrunnerjohn...I suppose a person could add some operating electronics from ERR and make the other trailing A unit a stand-alone operational unit. Might have a problem if you wanted to add it in a A-B-A consist.

Those covers are held in place by small plastic tabs. You can remove them but there is a danger of breaking the tabs off. The best way to get them off is from the inside where you can push the tabs out instead of pulling on them.

T have the SP Daylight version with cruise and smoke, interestingly enough this version has a cruise board in each powered A controlled by one R2LC. You could easily add another r2LC board to have 2 independent units. I did need to glue the tires on to keep them from popping off.

Well, you can run MU with ERR equipped units.  I've run two MU with one having the ERR Cruise Commander M with Lionel TMCC and the other having the ERR Cruise Commander full package, works fine.  If you equipped the lead unit with the ERR Cruise Commander M, you could do it.
