I ran this guy around Christmas and then put him back on the shelf.  I put him on the

track today and he was doa.  I checked for loose wires and any melted areas, but could

find none.  Picture is a bit blurry.  Am I correct that the QSI reverse is on the end?  I also

see two wires going to the speaker from the boards between the motors.  Are both of

these boards just for the horn sound?  Any hints as to what might have gone el crappo?

Can the QSI reverse unit just die from sitting around idle?  I am quite puzzled since everything

looks hunky-dory.

Thanks for the input.  Sounds logical that it could be contaminated somehow.  I'll clean up what I can and see if that helps.  Thanks again to everyone.

Swanko,

My apologies but GGG is correct this GG-1 does have a QSI unit with DCRU.  Sorry, but I got my engines mixed up because I was working with my faulty memory rather than checking on the actual engine.  Nevertheless, this engine does NOT have a battery and the repair techniques I offered in my post still hold true because I did reseat the boards on my old MTH GG-1 just a few months ago and  I have used the CRC cleaning method on other modern MTH engines with good results.  Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Pins in connections like the boards have can oxidize over time even while connected.

Removing and re-seating them a couple times will scrape through this and achieve function.

Rubbing the pins with a pencil eraser will clean them very well. (Work experience here on old Industrial control units.)

Running the engines regularly helps avoid this as the vibration from running down the track seems to keep the oxidation scrubbed through.

This is similar on all electronics, not just trains.
