Do you need the board or the chips? I have a RS 2.5 board here, but I used the chips for another locomotive in a RS4 board set.
Are you sure the K-Line has RailSounds II? What does the board look like?
I'm sure someone here can help you if I can't, we just need to know what we're dealing with. What's the exact model of the locomotive? You mention TCA, what year was it produced? I happen to have a K-Line GS-4 SP Daylight, it has RailSounds 4 boards.
John, if Jim can't use the board, I might be able to. I have a Kline loco that the plastic item that the chip snaps into has popped off the board, the chips are intact, but the board is unusable. LMK what you need for it and how much shipping would be to 19549 zip code. Thanks!
For either of you guys, the exact part number of the board in question would be useful here. The board I have is this board. It's the integrated RailSounds power and audio board, and is labeled LIONTECH RailSounds 2.5 rev 1.2 on the back near the large socket. It also has a number on the other end of the back of 589-699.
If either of you have a pic of the board your after I'll check my ancient electronic part bin from upgrades done in the past for one.
Jim
I suspect that this is actually an RS-4 board that someone swapped the generic chips out with an RS 2.5 set? K-Line RS equipment is after the license agreement and used the modular RS4/TMCC equipment with "generic sounds".
The other possibility is someone did a conversion using RS-2.5 board they pulled from something else and swapped around the chips? The boards are different sizes/shapes but the socketed chips are the same irregardless of 2.5, 3, or 4.
I haven't seen any K-Line stuff with the 2.5 board, which is why I'm curious what we actually have here.
I have this engine and there is no way it is RS2. All the electronics are in the tender and it is a Lionel modular motherboard with R2LC, RS4 amp, RS4 sound board plugged in. Mine has a "generic" Daylight sound set complete with diesel horn as well as steamboat whistle. Sadly it is also 1 chuff per rev.
I doubt it is a conversion either since all K-line GS-4's were TMCC. Unlike many other of their engines it was not offered in conventional.

That's what I was thinking Neil, I have never seen a K-Line with RS 2.5 in it.

That is a RS 4 board. Are the chips ok and the board is dead or the other way around?
I think just the board is bad, I found one on Lionel's web site, blank with no chip, how would one remove the chip without breaking it
Chip Pulller. DO NOT TRY TO USE SCREW DRIVERS OR PICKS OR ANYTHING ELSE.
Looks like this:
Locally, Radio Shack usually has those as well.
Since you can buy the board for the same price with chips, I'd at least get some generic chips to match as close as possible your engine. Then, if the chips are actually bad, you still have sound.
You're correct. Those aren't socketed chips. Also not sure where they came from in spite of the Lionel labeling. RS-2.5, 3 and 4 all had socketed data chip and processor. This may have been a TCA "exclusive" with custom boards for this K-Line loco?
RS 2.5 board with sound set is available for $90
part number 6918071T56
I guess that makes sense. The socketed chips were prone to oxidation and vibration problems. This would make chip swapping pre se impossible and may have cut down in production steps. I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time

The sad part is that his chips can't be reused. They are the Daylight specific soundset which is not available anymore. It incluses the "steamboat" whistle and even a diesel horn sound.
Neil
I believe you have to contact Lionel and send back the old board, at least that's the way it used to work.
I can take chips like that off with a hot air rework station.
I have a new RS4 board with the Daylight sounds available...
I sent you an email.
