Morning all.

I have decided to put two 4 by 8’s (Photo 1) together in the middle of my around the wall layout to serve as a base for the yard/ engine roundhouse area. I have a 34” roundabout and a three stall engine building approximately 36 inches deep. Those two items alone will take up about 40% of the square footage ( assuming a foot or so track distance from round to engine house).

Mianne base work somewhat limits exactly how you can site the round. Under the plywood you build up a support structure about three feet square and that means you cannot drop it into the middle of a plywood sheet (see Photo 3 by way of example, I can move the three by three within the four by four grid spacing by rearranging the supports).

I am seeking advice or especially pictures of how you might have attacked this. There should be space for a reasonable yard layout in the extra area. I have a four by four foot space (Photo 2) to go to the main layout from the this middle plywood island (could be a panel or bridge).

@jpc  Jerry, i wish I could give you advice; however, I'm contemplating the exact same thing with trying to figure out how I can fit both a TT(Millhouse)  and RH(Altoona Model Works) into my layout. It requires more space than I thought and I don't want to jam everything together. I dont know if this helps but if you look at Norms Trains on Youtube, he has videos on his TT and RH implementation.

There are several factors that will determine how much space your turntable (TT) and roundhouse (RH) will require.  First, the size equipment you are wanting to rotate governs the size of the TT AND the length of your RH stalls.  If you run smaller equipment and can use 24" TT with 25" RH stall length, you might save yourself almost 2 full feet of length from the back wall of the RH to the farthest point on the TT.  But, if you run large equipment, you will NEED a 34"-36" TT and a 36"-38" RH stall.

Further complicating the calculation of space needed is that the distance between the TT end of track and the RH door for each stall is a function of the angle that each stall is attached to its adjoining stall.  I have attached a series of files produced by Korber Models & Altoona Models (both produce roundhouses) showing the space requirements for their products with various turntables.

As a final note, it is highly recommended that your whisker tracks (all those that lead to, or away from, your TT) be laid with about 4 inches of straight track right next to the TT lip.  Curves that close to the TT lip usually generate unpleasant experiences for your engines.
