In the photo below you see my new model of Space X’s Crew Dragon spacecraft (middle, lower track). I searched for a 1:48 Crew Dragon spacecraft model for more than a year. It completes my Space Exploration train which has models of many noteworthy early US unmanned rockets and space exploration craft, and Apollo 11 (track above and behind it), and our forthcoming two, NASA’s Orion spacecraft (left) and Boeing’s Starliner “spacebus” (right). All four of these spacecraft, particularly the models of the most recent three: Orion, Crew Dragon, and Starliner, are challenges for tunnel and overpass clearances on my layout, and required I take a Dremel to two tunnel portals to raise their height slightly.
My model is a custom-made 1:48 3-D printed model that I sanded, primed, painted and detailed (inside the “trunk” and custom-made details.) Frankly this is not the best model – nothing I tried includingd sanding and ‘gap filling primers’ would get rid of the 3-D printer ridges. Nonetheless, until a better commercial model or kit becomes available, this will have to do. When a bettermodel is available, I will try to get that . . .
Still trying to find a good 1:48 model (hopefully with folding wings) of Virgin Galactic - already have a flatcar ready for it.
