Actually, nothing was set aside for me.  In July I filled out a form with my credit card info and phone number, along with my points coupons.  It's rung up like a regular transaction at the beginning of business day when the ornaments are released, I just come in anytime during the weekend to pick my items up.  Granted, I do have a long relationship with this store and usually buy all my ornaments there so the manager knows what my interests are, but I've done this with other Hallmarks and the process is the same.

I've been looking for a display like this since my original one ran out of space a few years ago and the ornaments are starting to clutter in it. Did you make this one yourself?

Nick, sorry I can't be of much help.  I picked up the case in Williamsburg, VA.  My wife and I were out walking our puppy and this was set out by the curb.  It had N gauge track glued to cork roadbed on the shelves.  I couldn't pass it up.  I removed the cork and track.  It's just the right size, so far.  It's also grooved for sliding doors.  Probably professionally made for retail sale.

Kohl's has the black Lionel Engine and Caboose but not the pink Limited Edition Engine, which is the subject of this thread.

All the Hallmark ornaments at Kohl's are priced at MSRP, so there is no advantage at purchasing there vs the Hallmark stores, unless Kohl's is more convenient.

The only advantage of Kohls is they do discount Hallmark ornaments AFTER Christmas but you better plan on being there right when they open. Ive never known Hallmark to do that unless the local stores fear the wrath of momma Halls here in KC.

Be sure to ask about the pink loco ornament. It was kept on the cashiers counter that faced the back of the store. Absolutely no reference to it on the main store display.

I've used the 15%, 20%, and 30% off coupons at Kohl's for the ornaments.  I didn't know there was a secret stash of Limiteds.
