I am just getting back into trains.  I am 36 and when I was younger my dad had layout in our basement. I would spend hours running trains and creating scenarios.  Then when I was about 13 the trains just didn't hold my interest anymore.  I now have twin 2 year olds and just recently purchased the PE RTR set.  To see their eyes as I am assembling the track on the carpet and getting ready to run the train is just incredible.  Now it has spawned into I need to build our own layout in the basement.  I have been acquiring some different cars from our LHS and Ebay and I do believe that might be about as much fun as actually running the trains.  I constantly find myself getting lost on ebay or in the lionel catalogs for hours just looking for new things I may want to buy to add to our eventual layout.

I have been having so much fun.  I think it is important for my boys to actually use their hands for play instead of staring at a screen for entertainment as they grow and mature.  They will be forced into screens for school, work, and entertainment enough as they grow older.  This will hopefully provide some form of entertainment where they can actually use their imaginations and God willing maybe pass this great hobby on to their kids someday.

I am very new here and glad to have found this community where I can share my re-kindled passion for something I have great memories from my childhood.

Thanks for having me.

First, a warm welcome to our Forum. You will find this is the best resource available for O-Gauge information.

I can relate first hand to your comments. I am a twin and my Dad had the insight to introduce my brother and I to this hobby at an early age. This love of trains has always been with me. What a good move to get your boys interested and a layout is a must for them, particularly now.

Thanks for you post, it is always good to see new people join the Forum.

Welcome. There are decent bunch of guys here and the collective brain-trust can be very helpful.

The PE "brought me back" too. I've backed off recently, but became an eBay hound as well. When I was about at your stage, I picked up a copy of RR Track software. It's fun building virtual layouts and sorting through what you like, and more especially what you don't like.

Welcome to the forum!

Your story sounds so familiar to me!

I have 2 grandsons and I got started with the Polar Express set for Christmas 2012 and now I am a full time Lionel train junkie! I still have not settled on a permanent track plan for my layout, but that has not stopped me from having fun with my trains!

Buying trains is so much fun, but I learned some important lessons.

1. Not to buy on credit! I charged everything for 6 months then took 3 months to pay it off. Now I have a budget.

2. Very few items won't reappear again on eBay. Just because there is only one now does not mean there won't be others later.

3. Learn from the experts! You found the best place to learn about Lionel trains much sooner then I did!

4. Have fun and don't let any one tell you how to enjoy your trains! Listen to everyone's advice, but you are the CEO of your railroad. As George W Bush said "I am the chief decider"

Welcome !

You will find all the info you need is contained in this forum.

Just take the opinions as what they are. Some of us have deep conviction and affinity for one brand or another.

They all have advantages, you just have to decide what YOU want.

And watching the kids is what really brings the fun into trains for me.

Enjoy your time with the boys.

Gilly

That is great advise, I wish I had thought of it!

I use AnyRail, I started with the free trial and used it for months before I finally purchased it, I love it.

There are several track software programs available, but I can't tell you which one is best.

Welcome to a great source of knowledge.  Your 2 year old twin boys are at a great age to be a part of your new journey and will create life long memories for them just like you had with your dad.  Many of us had the pleasure of experiencing the same thing with our kids and are thoroughly enjoying another cycle of fun and memories with our grand kids.  Enjoy!

Welcome to our OGR forum family!!  We all look forward to your future posts as you and your boys discover all of the joys this hobby has to offer.  Just reading your post is an inspiration and is an illustration and example of how this hobby can be a learning experience for our youngsters.  Your boys are very lucky to have a father like you!!!
