Only thing of mild interest is the set of four side dump ore cars.....some items are unbelievable, such as all those super short cars on one truck. Could have provided a  list of items that R&D $ would have been better spent on.

I think the little passenger cars are a tad pricey, but as many catalogs and road names as they've been in, they seem to sell well.

All Union Pacific for me although only passenger cars. In the UP Excursion line I have gone for (1) add on set #4 which is the one with the Lone Star Business Car and (2) the Promontory “Experience the Union Pacific” former RPO baggage car.

The catalog illustration of the latter car shows it has six wheel trucks:

Please pardon my ignorance but although this strikes me as definitely unusual compared to all of the other Excursion cars offered by Lionel, it seems to be accurate to the prototype, at least judging by the below image:

I would like to mention that Charles Ro, mr. muffins, and train world put the wrong photo for the #4 pack. It shows the wrong vista dome and the second car isn’t even the observation car. Any thoughts?

A couple dealers have the wrong photos.

Additionally, the catalog shows Lone Star and Kenefick with 4 wheel trucks, but I confirmed with Dave that they'll come with the correct 6 wheel trucks!

That sounds Great! Now we have to hope that they look as good as the photos.

Lionel made photos available to dealers before the catalog release so they could be prepared the day of the official release with prices. The 4 pack photo was the same as the 3 pack photo. Many used that photo instead of the one in the catalog.

Hopefully the catalog is correct.

Like Hancock my only order will be UP cars but with 2 of the #4 add ons. One Lone Star will get relettered for Kenefick.

I just noticed  the Funeral train set will have another Overland diner. This car was offered in with the Excursion cars already. I know the sounds will be different but a 2066 Power Car would have been a better choice IMO as it has never been done in O scale.

It’s odd but Nassau have the wrong photo for the #4 set as well but I am sure they’ll ship the right one.

The six wheel trucks of the Business Cars completely escaped my attention but I am glad to have confirmation that the two Lionel are making will have them. I did not look beyond the catalog description and illustrations although these cars are described as having new tooling.

However I am expecting that Lionel will make these with fairly “generic” details as I expect they intend to issue such cars in other road names. Looking around for exterior and interior details of the real thing (and the interiors matter to me as these cars have a very different configuration than any of the Lionel 21” car interiors issued to date), I found several illustrations of Lone Star:

The above shows it with what looks like caboose-like marker lights in addition to all the other rear lighting. It doesn’t appear always to have been configured that way:

Often when I am researching passenger car details I check out what has been produced in HO scale brass models, which are anything but “generic” and the manufacturer’s research is good enough for me/my purposes. I know that Overland modeled the Business Cars including Lone Star a few years back:

To be honest I have no idea what some of that roof detail i.e. at the rear of the car is about but I definitely don’t expect Lionel to replicate it. I think I could probably scratchbuild some of those parts.

As nice as the power car would be, that would require more all new tooling which is not cheap.

Anyone interested in this train would be more than willing pay. Look at how many are jumping at the chance to pay 500 bucks for traditional GG1s when they can be had for a 5th of the cost all day long.

I regard the generator cars as a poor man’s version of the much bigger and more elaborate 2066 power car. Yes, a proper version of that would require new tooling but the ability to produce new and more prototypical models was supposed to be an advantage of going over to ABS plastic instead of aluminum.

Anyway I have looked into making the generator car included in the original UP Excursion Train set a rough facsimile of  2066 by adding the roof detail. Models of that car have been produced in N and HO scale.

2CFC6D08-2DD4-40B4-85D4-F68D5118F890

It could only be a facsimile because the generator car is a short wheelbase model and the window/side treatments are completely different from the above.

ATSF Northern 3757 (I have the 2014 versions of 3751 and 3759), the California Limited heavyweight cars and the ATSF switcher.   (I'm modeling transition-era Santa Fe, so these will fit right in).    But it is disappointing that everything gets more and more expensive and there is very little that is genuinely new.   Seems like with both Lionel and MTH, everything is on a 4-6 year cycle of repetition.   I don't see any improvements to the ATSF northern from 2014, and how many Big Boy and Challenger variants can anyone need?

I may be interested in the Frisco 4500. However I have visited the prototype in Tulsa numerous times and I am  concerned that I will be disappointed when the Lionel Model arrives.

I’m sure you are only getting a blue paint  job on a generic 4 8 4 so more than likely l will pass on purchasing one.

The $1,599 retail price is approaching the price of a highly detailed prototypical correct brass model.

 Thanks,

Richard Gonzales

FWIW, the price being asked by one of the main dealers is $1,280 so roughly $300 off retail/MSRP.

However, that does not answer your other concerns about what you'll a actually be getting, which in my case applies across all of the Legacy steam engine offerings in this catalog that I might have been interested in.

I have taken the plunge and ordered the 21" passenger cars I have mentioned above but only because I think Lionel has worked out the kinks in the manufacturing of these.

Quite a lot actually. I did manage to get my order settled and brought it with me yesterday when I picked up my caboose.

CP Jupiter(the painted one)

UP #119(the painted one)

Pennsy #573

UP, CP, Pennsy 1860 passenger cars, along with Woodruff sleeping & parlor car

B&O EM-1 #7609(really been looking forward to seeing this one)

Santa Fe Northern Class 3751 #3759

Santa Fe California Limited Pack A, B, & C & Stationsounds diner #1406

Four 40' Reefers(Santa Fe &  Pacific Fruit Express)

All 5 8,000 gallon tank cars

& finally B&O C2428 L12 caboose

This was definitely a list I tinkered with for some time, as I wasn't exactly sure if I would be getting everything on it. I realized though that everything on my list was exactly what I wanted. I did cheat a little with the reefers and the 8K tank cars, they weren't originally on my list, but I found I liked them quite a bit, so I added them.

Wow Dave!  What a list!  To me the gem is the B&O M1.  I would go for the Western Maryland version if I was buying!

Yeah, that is quite a list. Tony's daughter Chrissy says that I have ordered just as much before, but everything I have looked at is usually around 16 items, not 23. I did mention that her father writes bigger, and she mentioned he's left handed, so I guess that makes it so he's filling more lines(I think she said their order sheets have 25 lines).

It would definitely be interesting if WM did have an EM-1, that would be something. I was surprised when first looking in the catalog that there are so many "fantasy" paint schemes because B&O were they only real ones. I guess its to aspire to inspire someone.

You are right about the fantasy schemes!  The fantasy for me is thinking I could afford it anyway, so no worries about me trying to run it on my layout anyway!!
