Please edit you title; the CORRECT model designation is GP40-2. EMD did NOT use dashes between the model type and the model number series. Some examples: GP7, SD7, GP30, GP35, SD40, SD45, SD40-2, SD45-2, etc., etc., etc..

Is it a GP40 or a GP40-2 then? What is the spotting difference? (I know, I'll go look it up!)

6504, Class GP-40, was built in November 1966, #32648, FN 7943-5, as B&O 3688, Class GP-40.  It was renumbered 6504 and became CSX 6504, Class GP-40.  It was retired on October 21, 1996, and sold to Metro East Industries on December 6, 1996.  It was sold as Helm Atlantic Leasing 423 in 1997 and sold to Progress Rail Services as PRLX 2020.  It was sold as Belt Ry of Chicago 232 in October 2012.  It was rebuilt as model GP23-ECO in October 2013.
