Can some NS guys tell us the signifigance of this color scheme?  I have seen it for a few years, it may not be for widespread application.

From what I understand, the scheme was done to highlight the AC-DC conversion of the old Dash-9s to AC44C6M rebuilds.   I believe the mane color is based on the where it was rebuilt - tuscan mane for Roanoke (NW), blue mane for Altoona (CR).  The first 2 SD70ACCs were done in yellow to honor CAT, who did the rebuild.  Not sure why 8520 has the red.

I thought there are blue and red versions.

Also was in lionel catalog...  on the run of dash9s if i recall...  i will have to check.  But i thought they cataloged one of these.

Yup.  Check page 36 of the 2018c2.  There is one of these in the last catalog.

All that's missing is green, gold, orange and purple "mane bonnets"...

In 2015, NS had GE rebuild two of its DC-traction powered Dash 9-40C locomotives as AC-traction
powered AC44C6M units. After successful testing, NS went forward with 16 additional rebuilds in 2016.
Of the 16 rebuilds, 12 were rebuilt by GE, 2 by NS at the Juniata Locomotive Shop, and 2 by NS at its
Roanoke Locomotive Shop. While the 2015 units were painted in a special blue, gray, gold, white,
and black paint scheme to highlight
the DC to AC conversion, NS chose to modify the special scheme for those units built at JLS, painting it in a black, blue,
gray, and white scheme. The JLS units feature a blue "mane" stripe to signify that they was rebuilt at
JLS (the two units rebuilt at Roanoke will have a tuscan red "mane" stripe, while the 12 units coming
from GE will be in painted in the standard NS black and white scheme).

Anyone know if the blue 4001 that was wrecked last year is back in service and still blue?

it's still sitting in Altoona last I heard

She is in the process of being rebuilt from my knowledge. Last I saw her a few months back, she was in the process of being stripped down to a bare frame.

Guys...we are getting requests from owners of copyrighted photos to take them down....so be sure you are not posting photos that are copyrighted....one obvious sign is it says so on the photograph!

Alan, here is a link to an article about Copyright and Fair Use. I spent almost thirty years behind a camera doing product illustration and editorial photography.  I ran into educational organizations and groups using my photos on several occasions.  The big question is whether this discussion groups primary function is educational and whether the photos in question are used for monetary gain by the group or it's members.          j
