The engine starts up by it self and will not respond. Tried factory reset, which did not help and then tried deleting the engine. It still starts by itself and the remote cannot find the engine. Earlier it said the engine was not on the track. All the other engines work fine. Track signal 8 to 10. New to DCS could use some help. Thanks

Does this engine have a DCS/DCC switch? If it does, make sure that it's in the DCS position.

Checked the switch it was in DCS and in 3rail mode. The other engines in signal check are 8 min but this eng is in the 3 to 4 range. Also the hand held says out of range right near the TIU.
Well I tested the two other MTH locos and they are fine and show a track signal on 10. The SD 50 has been reset and when a track signal test on the same track shows 1 or out of range. Batteries in remote are new. Eng will start and the horn will blow continues to sound even with a short touch to the button. Help.
Wire may not be routed over the board correctly. There are post that show correct wiring for PS-3 diesel boards if you do a search. G
I took the shell off and the wires are not over the board. This is a new locomotive and I'm sorry I bought it. The engine starts by itself and doesn't have any control . The remote says engine not on track. By all the other locomotives I have signal strength on 8 to 10. It will not accept a reset. Am at my wits end. Can any on help please. I have two other MTH engines both rail king and they operate very well. I have 6.0 software.
BILLSSR, if re-routing the wires didn't work for you, it may be a weak ground. Try removing the black ground screw on each truck and scrape the black paint off the underside of the screw head and re-install. If that don't help remove each wire nut and re-twist the wires and reinstall the nuts on the groups of wires in the engine. I've seen where a wire gets push off the group when a nut was originally installed. Sometimes there's too many wires for the size of the nut and a slightly larger nut needs to be used. I like the small type that have the coil spring down inside. If still no luck, remove each plug from the board and inspect the sockets for a bent pin. Re-install the plugs and push down on each crimped metal wire end in the plug with a wooden tooth pick. You will notice they will all seat a little further onto the pins for a better connection.
I know this is a far far reach but by any chance do you have Lionel Legacy system on the same rails? I have seen issues like this maybe once before with one of my engines and when I removed the legacy signal wire, all was good. Like I said something similar has happened to me with only one of my over 200 MTH engines.

Hi Guys, I looked at the wire routing and changed things bent the caps over and checked the 40 pin connector. Wires are over the caps. I put the loco on the tracks and powered up the system. It didn't start by itself. It responded to all commands so far. Now I have a question. Why by rerouting the wires over the caps change everything? Thanks for all the great input. I have since tried this loco three times and it is performing just great.

Less electrical noise(interference) to the signal gen...curious as to what your signal test levels are now?
Just checked signal strength in the same track that had 1 to 3 and it is a 9 to 10. What a difference. Thanks to all who assisted. This forum is so valuable.

Probably not..some ps3 more prone to signal interference. On my ps3 engines,once the board has been modified and the black pickup screws machined for electrical contact, these engines become very reliable. I have 21 of these diesels all in regular use..most are member engines in 5 engine multi unit power.
