Hello All!

I just joined the OGR Forum and wanted to introduce myself.

I am an collector of MTH O gauge, MTH One gauge and USA Trains G gauge for the last 15 years and have recently retired. Now I have the time to become an operator and plans for building an indoor O gauge layout for that collection begin now. I have an overhead G gauge track running an MTH Dash 8 - 40B with various freight cars in my house and also set up a seasonal front yard Christmas display with many of the USA Trains engines and all of the USA Christmas cars made since 1988 on custom trestles and 260 ft. of LGB track.

I am looking forward to participating actively in the OGR forums and hope to get to know you all better in the future. I live in Davenport, FL just South of Disney. Are there any O gauge clubs active in this area? If so I would appreciate an introduction.

I need to get all of these MTH engines, cars and accessories out of the boxes in my closet and running on a layout so I believe this is going to be loads of fun.

Roll On!

Eric

Flee, run for you life and never come back.  There's nothing good here.  You will get this thing called a train bug, it will drain your wallet, it will cause your wife to leave you, your kids will resent you.  Nothing good will come of it.

Other than that, welcome aboard.

Well something good can come out of it in some cases.

Thanks for the replies and greetings Marty, Barry, Gary, Craig & Chris!

Barry,

I have met you before at York, Spring 2017. We discussed The DCS Companion so thanks for the info, super book!

I have an appointment in Winter Park on July 27. I would definitely like to see your layout. Not sure about the rules and etiquette on these forums yet so how do we communicate to coordinate schedules? Pretty sure our emails are posted. I have another trip up the Dragon (I-4) Aug. 2 if that works better.

Welcome Eric!

This is a great place to meet new folks in the hobby and share your knowledge and enjoyment of the hobby.   I see you are already connecting with folks in your area.

I, myself, am located a bit north of Philadelphia, PA.  I notice you've been to York before - if you make it up north again please join fellow forumites at York events, Trainstock or other events up our way.

Thanks for your replies and welcome wishes Greg, Adriatic and Allan. I am happy to be on board with such a bunch of friendly guys!

Greg,

I have a cousin not too far from you in Easton, PA. He is a true modeler and has won some awards on his naval vessels and WWII aircraft. He is into HO and I have seen his layout of the Lehigh Valley RR in his basement. You guys up North are lucky to have basements. No such thing here in FL.

I may go to York in October so I will look you guys up if I can make it.

Thanks for your replies and welcome wishes Mike & Joe! I do believe the OGR Forum is going to be a great group judging from the initial posts,

Mike G.

I was out your way in 2010 to the National Garden Railroad Convention in Tacoma. G and One gauge does not attract as many guys as O does but I still enjoyed the convention. Saw many great outdoor layouts in the Tacoma - Seattle area and especially enjoyed the train ride and active museum and old passenger car refurbishment at Snoqualmie. Hard to beat the scenery there.

Like you my initial exposure to trains was as a 7 year old child receiving an S gauge American Flyer set for Christmas paid for with Green Stamps. My little brother and I ran the wheels off that set and it was the best Christmas present ever. Back about 2005 my older brother was helping my Mother move and found the Flyer set in the attic. He sent it to me and that rekindled my fire for trains. Probably a very common story but I thought I would share it.

Congratulations on all of the above!  The "OGRF" (O Gauge Railroading Forum) is THE go-to resource for all things O Gauge/Scale and prototype railroad expertise.  Being a retired railroader, I appreciate the fact that there are a number of my 1:1 brethren here, too - both active and retired.  Trying to achieve the illusion of realism includes an understanding of what real railroads do and how they do it.

You'll find folks here who model at every level, from reproducing childhood pleasures with crude post-war trains and track to ultra-detailed brass import and scratchbuilt scale models running on hand-laid scale track.  Whatever your interest, you'll find fellow travelers here.  Got technical questions?  Use the search engine to find past postings regarding your issues.  Can't find relevant past postings?  Post your own question(s) and you'll have responses from the most competent folks in the field.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the forum.  If any of your MTH engines have Proto 1 sounds, make sure you replace the onboard 9vt battery with one of the conversion circuits that look like a battery but isnt BEFORE you put them on the track.  A dead battery will cause the Proto 1 sound board computer to scramble and you will be doing some major rework with a new sound board.   Enjoy your retirement!

Thanks for the welcome and info, Mr. Holmes, Tom & Mike. I have plenty of catching up to do so I appreciate the suggestions!

Mike,

I do have one old Proto 1 WV P&P Shay, 20-3023-1 that I bought used and the sound did not work when I tested it. I tried charging the battery on the track for 4 hours 1 day and another 4 hours about 3 days later. The engine ran but garbled sound so I removed the battery and bought a new MTH 50-1008 8.4v rechargeable battery. Have not put it in yet. Is that the correct battery or am I missing something. Is it possible my sound board is already roached?
