Boy those WBB FP45s are really showing their age.  Wonder if they plan on refreshing the tooling somewhat at some point?  Maybe not to necessarily put more add-on details but at least to make the simulated grab irons and other molded-in details a little crisper and stand out more.  Ditto on their SD45, although with that one the hood needs to be narrowed; way too wide.

They are nice for $99.95, if you want scale detail the price would go through the roof.
Thanks
Pat

For $100, they are a very nice locomotive, certainly on par with any of the postwar diesels or MPC re-issues I grew up on.  I think Williams, and WBB, understand at there is a market for sturdy, well made locomotives that don't cost $500 a pop.

Ordered an FP-45 SF colors on the 23rd, went out on the 24th, arrived here on the 26th (Georgia).   Excellent!  Thanks Pat's Trains.  Going to run trains.

Run perfectly!  Next it will receive the series treatment: motors in series with a couple of thermistors.  And LED headlights.  Great looking loco.  The handrails are better than I expected.

Even if Pat could blow them out for $1, that doesn't mean it makes sense to repeat that in the future.  I doubt it is Williams business model to sell $95 locos.  Just like I doubt RMT manufactured those Ore cars to sell them at $10 apiece.

John's point is still valid.  Williams needs to up the ante, and they already are.

When were these blowout locos manufactured?  Maybe they should make fewer of them next time.

Great deals from Pat.  A forum sponsors and worthy of our business.

I have seen folks take the WBB conventional units and turn them into some slick DCS or TMCC units.  And I have seen some (like me) just be happy as can be running conventional.

If I have time over the weekend, I will attempt to seprately start a thread on the WBB / Williams pricing and explain this in plain language terms.  Whatever Bachmann or RMT does is their business, and I will not opine on the merits of it because I am not "there" and do not know the management and financial facts that drive them.  I do know I have gotten some really good deals lately on both WBB and RMT - and with that I am very pleased.  But what these companies do as a business goes beyond the hobby.  It involves macro economics, project management, merging of businesses (not easy to do), changes to business models, and moving ahead with new product AFTER the old product is out of the distribution channels (think Apple: they discount exisiting products to a certain price point in a effort to clear out inventory before the newer product goes on sale).

As much as we'd like the train business to be simple - they are just selling trains - it is not.  And for a retailer like Pat, man has it changed alot.  I give him credit and all the others for finding a way to continue to provide us with the joy that comes from visiting their train shops and hobby stores - and/or as things go in 2013 - seeing the UPS/FedEx truck pull up outside the house!

My point had nothing to do with the viability of any business model but rather was simply that, as a consumer, I appreciate the choice and price point.  Moreover, everyone is entitled to an opinion regarding the desirability of anything, including a toy train, but good manners would indicate you should refrain from expressing such an opinion in a thread where a man (who is a forum sponsor, btw, so he is paying for the platform) is trying to make a living.

I disagree.  John's criticism was completely constructive, respectful, and not rude.  He never said anyone shouldn't buy from Pat, just what Williams should do next time.

Who doesn't love to buy their stuff at blowout prices, anyways?
