Does anyone know if PFE reefers ran on NYC tracks. I have not been able to locate any photos or info. I assume they did coming east out of Chicago and back again. I wish I had the Thompson, Church, Jones book to research it.

I can't answer your question from personal experience. But I know I used to see them in PRR freight trains, so I'd be very surprised if they never made it to NYC trackage.
yes-i have a book that shows the freight yard outside nyc with plenty of pfe reefers.remember california is famous or fruits, veggies, etc.you do not have to have all nyc freight cars.
PFE cars can be seen in photo's of the yard at 30 street yard on the west side of Manhattan (car float yard from Weehawken) as well as the Weehawken yard on the west shore line.
Yes. I grew up by the NYC B&A in Ashland, Ma near Boston (20 miles) and saw those all the time as a kid. I liked the design and remember it well. Boston still has a big produce center in Chelsea, Ma. and that's where they went.
I have a book on Union Pacific and the Pacific Fruit Express - it was a monster operation with tens and tens of thousands of cars - a huge business. Anyway, I recall reading that that they advertised they went "from Califronia to Maine" so I figure you can use them anywhere. That is a big advantage of of having a bunch in my mind - not the main reason I have so many (I model Up and ATSF), but an additional one to help rationalize each purchase of another.
