The turnout on the inside loop was unknowingly thrown to the diverging route.
The Mohawk threw a traction tire but outside of that, not a scratch on either.
Fortunately, *** NO TRAINS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO***
OUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gomez Addams has nothing on you.

Whew. Sounds like you dodged a bullet. As my Dad used to say: "It's better to be lucky than good."

Another justification for PTC!
I don't understand the problem Rick. It looks like the anti-derail feature worked great. The trains didn't derail.
BTW, that's a great looking layout. This is the first I've seen more than the crossing where you installed the IR detector for the gateman. How are you liking that detector?
I like how the signal went from "Clear" to "Danger" to "Oh, never mind!"..

Thanks Steve! That gateman works great. I just updated that old thread with some 'finished product" photos and video.
RickO ... Well done!

Well mistakes happen even on the best of run railroads! Glad to hear nothing was damaged.
No PRR locomotives were involved so it's all good.
And thus the Penn Central was born ......
In the business that’s called a face-up, and someone is in trouble. In this day and age all involved would be going for a drug test. The NTSB will be there this evening 😄.
This was so thrilling, I'm tempted to stage some train wrecks and post videos of them here.
Just kidding. LOL.
But, if I happen to make a video of an unintended collision or derailment, I might post it here.
It is with profound pleasure, that I’m happy to report there was no wrong doing on the part of the New York Central operators manning this equipment, after careful review, we find the PRR at fault for shotty train control ( typical practice for that class 1 road) .......had the shoe been on the other foot, the trains would have passed by one another safely & soundly,.....😁😁😁

BTW Rick, gorgeous layout!!!
It almost looks staged, it's so "good". The collision sound is pretty convincing, too. Two of my favorite locos, having at it. Ouch. Lots of spills in the ESE's diner, I imagine.
Had to be the landlord's fault.
Nice-looking layout.
I just noticed you had a Interlocking tower (cabin) at that location.
What the heck was the switch operator doing - sleeping on the job!

What a great idea for a marketing campaign. A K4 smashing into a J series and then some new-fangled diesel in PC livery emerges from the explosion. It would have made an awesome TV commercial.
Probably still would have went bankrupt though.

LOL! Gómez Adams Cribari!
Don't text and engineer! 🤪🤪
Glad to see that no trains were harmed in the making of this video. 😂😂
Those are the kind of crashes you'd want. No damage. Good thing there is no repainting needed.
On my layout, I have a very easy and highly technical method of preventing head on collisions like this. I just don't have any switches between the mainline loops, hah hah. But this method prevents terrible head on collisions. But i have still had some bad collisions. Most of mine occur when the train comes uncoupled while the operator and crew are not on their toes and looking. The train nearly never goes into Emergency when it breaks as it should. It finishes making the loop and wham. And for some reason, my collisions of this nature are nearly always much worse than yours, unfortunately.
I was really surprised too that there were not terrible effects from that collision with those two heavy trains and locos, but very glad it was not bad. Thank you for sharing the video.
Gomez would be proud.....

Thanks everyone for the kind words, and the commentary is hilarious!
It really helped get rid of that sinking feeling I had when this happened.
In the end I posted it as I knew folks could get a chuckle.
The reefers behind the mohawk were brought out onto the outer loop across that turnout, and it was never reset to through.
When the switch was set against the opposing mainline, the power in that block should have been shut off. It's called interlocking and is very easy to do. Unless you wanted that to happen...
That ESE is a passenger train. Your problems are just beginning. I'm amazed that you haven't posted about the personal injury lawsuits yet.

I'm glad none of the precious graphite smokebox paint was harmed on the L-2a!
Worst train accidents I've ever had were with 18009 New York Central 3000. One Christmas the fireman's side piston took a header into the radiator pipe going up to my room(track was not screwed down and plywood also slid). The other was the great rug debacle which was a ton load of track I laid out, having as many cars pulled behind as it could pull. What wound up happening was that dang thumbtack coupler connected with the third rail and blew out the spring inside. 3000 has never pulled any freight since. But that will change when she gets back from her upgrade.
Hi Rick,
Ouch! but the layout is looking awesome !

If I had a dime every time this happen on my pike, I could afford a Vision Line Steamer. LOL
