Andre,

I think the Washington Times got it right (the first 2 samples)  Put the toy train advertisements right on the funnies, and the kids will pester 'Santa' to death for a train.

The Philadelphia's Great Toy Store Gimbles advertisement (lower right) reminded me of going clean into Pittsburgh in the mid '60s to see the big three, Gimbles, Kaufmann's and Horne's!  They had great Christmas displays, but I don't remember them selling trains.  May have, but by that time not so much or I would have remembered.

Thanks for the memories.  -  Bob Hope

The Washington Times may have suggested that Lionel put their ads in the funnies, but it probably was Lionel that made the final decision. When I was purchasing newspaper display ads, I choose were they went.

CW,

That line of reasoning makes sense to me.  The paper might make suggestions, but the customer gets the final say.

Wow .... lots of great stuff there! Great post!

"Of course you want a Lionel electric train! Every red-blooded boy does! ..... And here's how to get it ....... take Mother into your confidence. Mother is a peach. She has a way of getting things .... Take it from us, we know ..... And nothing is too good for her boy. "

Very far from nowadays presents.

Practical Gifts for Everyone.  Very interesting and instructive for boys.  Other than Erector sets and the bicycles and velocipedes, there isn't much else for kids, maybe a pocket knife.  Older girls may want the manicure set.
