Hello everyone,

I purchased this Lionel R-30 subway set a few weeks ago. I really like the way the doors operate, but one thing bugged me. When you open the doors the interiors look awesome, but when you fix your eyes on the motorized car with the doors opened, that's all you see is a grey plastic wall. Which of course is needed to hide all the electronics. So I came up with this idea, I took a picture inside each doorway of the car's detailed interior. Then My daughter and I printed the pictures on photo paper, we had to print them out a few times to get the correct size (as close as possible). I then took the shell off the motorized car and glued each photo in the correct spot, now when you open the doors you don't see a blank grey wall anymore, you see a detailed interior. Take a look at the attached photo's.

Thanks very much for looking,

Alex

Great idea. It looks really good. My one observation is that the third door from the left the photo is shot from a slightly lower angle than the other pictures so the floor seems like it undulates from the other doors to this one. But it should be an easy fix. I hope you don't take this as criticism it really is a good idea that looks convincing.

It always drove me nuts to see the grey plastic housing when the doors opened, i painted that all flat black along with gluing black cardstock over the windows that had the door motors in them as i did not like the window shade look! since my own subways are going to be destined for a shelf layout disguised as a El, i was going to copy pics of standees along with flat filed figures along with "back of head shots" to place at the windows!will post the results later this year when outside work comes to a stall here in Maine, Gman.

  • hopefully less fuzzy shot! sorry.

Thanks Mike R, Jeff, Brian, Silver lake, SIRT, Dennis, Vallieone, NYC 428, Dave, Chuck, Ben, Eliot, Galo, AGHR Matt, Christopher, and  NJCJOE, for the nice comments and and input.

Silver Lake yes you're correct that photo is at a different angle, I'll take another photo and replace it.

Dennis that one photo does look like a commode, it's some sort of control box.

NYC 428 we changed the size of the photo's quite a few times and we didn't take notice to the size, once they were correct. Sorry about that.

Ben yes Douzers was having a two for one sale, I also picked up a slightly used vacuum

cleaner. It came with a ton of attachments . LOL LOL

Thanks again to all,

Alex

Yes, Alex, very nicely done. I also envision you adding the same treatment for the windows and look forward to the subsequent photos you'll surely be posting showing the outcome. Keep it up! By you raising the bar higher, hopefully the manufacturers will take notice of the added realism such a "fix" gives their cars and wikewise consider including it in their future production runs.

I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before you do similar with the windows now that the doors came out so good.

Thanks for sharing!
