Here is a video of my MTH Premier NKP Berkshire that was upgraded from PS1 to PS3. Do you like the LEGACY 765 whistle better than this one? Or vise-versus?

Legacy whistle (Lionel) is not always accurate per the prototype, but I prefer the quality of the Legacy sound even if it is less accurate. It sounds more like the real thing to me. Others will disagree.
Just my opinion but, I think the whistle on the MTH 765 is more prototypical. And yes, I have been around the real NKP 765 since about 1979 or so.

I will agree that the sound quality on LEGACY engines is better than MTH, but I like the whistle on the MTH berks better.

I volunteer on it sometimes and the MTH whistle doesn't have as much bass, but it does sound more prototypical than the Lionel berks.
Honestly, I cannot tell the difference.
You can hear the real thing if you head to NE Ohio in September. FWRHS has just announced a Throttle Time event on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR this fall.

OK, please clarify that, i.e. what changed with the whistle on 765 from the "80s/90s" to today?
The whistle of today on the real 765 sounds the same as it would have been in the 80s and early 90s. 1993 was the last year the 765 ran before she was laid up for the major overhaul.
We ran a few years in the early 2000s where the whistle didn’t sound right because it needed repairs. It did not sound “right” but it worked. The whistle has long since been repaired and sounds today as it should and as it sounded in the 80s and 90s.

Thanks for the info, Rich. I remember using the whistle quite a bit when we were running in freight service on the TP&W, back in May of 1980. To my old ears, it sounded pretty much as it does now.

Was it a different whistle entirely or the same whistle tuned differently? To me, that's what the Lionel whistle resembles.

Just my opinion but, that doesn't sound any "different" to me, except of course that it is recorder from inside the cab.

Yeah, being inside the cab could certainly be what's slightly altering the sound, at least for my ears. Nonetheless, I prefer the Lionel berk whistle more due to its superior quilling ability.

Hey that's my Legacy NKP 765!
Don't forget the latest MTH PS3 release which differs from the PS2 NKP Berks. This is my 755 for comparison. The new NKP USRA Heavy Pacifics have the same whistle.

Excellent example of what your talking about and I agree 100%.
The whistle in the early video sounds cleaner and you can hear the harmony of the chimes better on the low end.
The whistle on the more recent video is more raspy/ worn sounding.

The "old" sound and present day sound difference seems much more subtle with this example, especially at the high range. Although, the mid and low range sounds so much cleaner and melodic, as RickO mentioned above.

Sounds the same as it always has to me.
Some nice scenes of former NKP 765 engineer Tom Stephens running in that video. Tom passed away about a month ago.
