Crud!

This was all going so well. For three weeks I was loving the whole DCS thing and it worked incredibly well. I have two completely separated track loops; one is served by Fixed Output 1 and the other is served by Fixed Output 2. When I fired up the system today, I got no response from my engine on Fixed Output 2 track. There was power, as the cars would light up, but whenever I tried to access the engine in any way, I got the dread "CHECK TRACK" message. I knew it wasn't a battery issue because I could see the locomotive when I moved it to the track on Fixed Output 1. Hmmm. I tried a TIU reset; then I tried a Remote reset (I only have 3 engines...). Did seem to do much of anything except that at some point, when I moved the engine back to Fixed Output 2 and fired up the power (I always turn power off when moving cars and engines around) it actual went into startup mode with lights and sounds and smoke... but still, no control. The engine would not move at all, and I couldn't initiate anything from the remote. It just sat there running through all the idle sounds and smoked. Couldn't get it to shut down without removing power.

So...

I checked the DCS settings and made sure it was ON on Fixed 2, which it was, so I shut everything down and connected the track loop to Variable Output 2 set to fixed (this forum is pretty helpful). BINGO!!! Back to normal!

Is there anything I can do to get Fixed 2 to start sending DCS signals again, or is that output totally hosed and I need to get a replacement???

Thanks and sorry for the novel. Perhaps it will help someone else...

Dropped off the TIU at the Hobby Shop today. They are MTH certified, but my guess is that won't make much difference - it will probably have to go back for repair/replace. It's time like this that make me really appreciate the guys who run in conventional mode. There's either electricity, or there isn't Smile

(I know its MUCH more complicated than that..)

I'll post results here as I get updates so that the next person who stumbles into this has an idea of what is entailed.

the stumper,
Something to think about, Barry advised me recently that MTH is due to come out with a new
hand held remote. What I plan on doing when MTH comes out with the new Hand Held, is investing in a revision L TIU and the new hand held also. My 4.10 TIU has worked so well that I am now going to add a TIU Rev L and hope for the same quality. Heck if I was sending the older TIU back for repair, I would just trade it on a Rev L.

Well, I promised I'd report back, but I almost feel bad for bumping this to the top because I didn't really learn anything other than it had to sent back to the factory. The real news is that one of my my LHS, T&K hobbies, really stepped up and gave me a new one off the shelf. Nicely done, and I do recommend John, Chuck, and the rest of the crew there. They have a good internet site and their prices are among the best.

To summarize, if your TIU stops sending DCS signals over an interface, it has to go back to MTH. I don't know if they can refurb them there, but thats the deal.

At lest my RR is back up and running.

Kerrigan,
I have one of those EAW TIU's, new from the box and it works so well I am afraid to have it upgraded. However my switching unit however was dead out of the box and had to be replaced. My hand held remote worked perfect for 5.6 years and now needs the wheel repaired. I really can't complain about my DCS,
in fact it really does work very well. MTH stood behind the one bad unit by replacing it, now I am waiting for the new hand held remote control to come out.
Probably purchase a TIU L revision with the new hand held.
