I have had my fill of frustrations with the MTH DCS app, but I'm tired of getting the "No TIU/WTIU Found" error when I've already started the engines and they are running around the layout.

I've tried every theory I can think of:  deleting the app and reinstalling it, restarting my tablet, using my phone instead of the tablet, trying another tablet, etc.  The list goes on and on.

Running trains should not be this frustrating and unreliable.  I'm not sure if others are experiencing the same issue but, like I posted prior, I'm at the point of selling my MTH engines and going strictly with Lionel, since I can run my Lionel engines using their remote with no problems.

Its no fun not being able to run the trains or even have any control over them.  This issue has been the main cause of my absence from model railroading and lack of enthusiasm for the hobby.

So unless there is a fix, and I mean a fix soon, I'll be researching the Lionel system, its compatibility with MTH, and going from there.  I want to be able to head down to my basement and run trains, not spend 30 minutes tinkering with a useless app that doesn't work.

Rod,

I am asking for help and complaining all at the same time, that's how frustrated I am.

I have an old, probably one of the first TIU's made, I have a separate WIU.  All the firmware is up to date, that I know of through the app, I don't know how to update the WIU by itself.  The iOS software on the tablet I use and the phone are up to date.

I never, and I mean never, had an issue for all the years I used the handheld remote, but as soon as I switched over to the app, its been one issue after another.  The main issue is that the app doesn't seem to stay connected and I have no control over the trains, it just freezes.  I've checked everything I can think of, I'm just frustrated that what is made to simplify the hobby and make it more enjoyable has done the exact opposite.

@DarrenCaruso I had a similar issue when using the app and the WIU, I kept losing connection to the TIU. Everything worked fine with just the TIU and handheld remote. I narrowed it down to one of my PS2 engines. It worked perfect with just the TIU and handheld, but when I tried to use that engine with the app and WIU I would get the error message about "No TIU/WTIU Found".

I did a factory reset on that offending engine using the TIU and handheld. I then re-added that engine to both the handheld and the app. This solved my connection failures with the app and the WIU.

Hopefully you don't have a lot of DCS engines to check. I was just as frustrated as you, but doing the factory reset on that engine solved my connection problems with the app and WIU. Good luck.

I reset the app, reset the engines, switched the WIU to my home network.  This got rid of the "NO TIU/WIU Found" error message but the app is still unresponsive.  I'm not sure what the problem is.  Upon start-up, I can start the engine, but then the app is non-functional, almost like it freezes.  I can try refreshing the engine list and the app, but it is sporadic, and function of the app lasts for a brief moment, then back to frozen.

Mine does not work great with my home router. But my home router is 7 years old and full of spider webs. I switched back to MTH and everything was fine. --Until I got an email.-- The notification popped on my iPhone and everything immediately went haywire. My theory is that even though I switched to "MTH" (Local Area Network), internally I still had a connection to the spider router. So I pulled up LUCI and got rid of the connection to my home WIFI that got set when I tried "Home" earlier. Now all is good.

Using the link below, on page 6 go to the section 'For Routers that Require Manual Setup (no WPS feature)'. Reverse steps 12 and 13. In other words set the ESSID from your home wifi name back to "NONE". I'm not sure the encryption matters at this point.

Well, I've done some more research and was able to log into LuCi.  I was logged into LuCi for more than 10 minutes with no connection issues between my laptop and the WIU, so I eliminated any issues with the WIU.

I am narrowing down the issue to the device that I am using to operate the trains.  The tablet I got from Amazon last year is actually an Apple tablet.  I didn't find this out until I got into my router to check the signal, 2.4 vs 5, etc.  I am going to try my old tablet that I used on the last layout and see if that fixes any issues, but I had drops even with that device.

Still, its very frustrating that running the MTH trains is almost impossible.  There should not be this many issues, maybe its due to the devices, maybe there needs to be firmware updates, unfortunately I don't have technical knowledge or the time to figure it out.  I want to go down to my basement, turn the power on, and run my trains.  I do not want to spend hour after hour, day after day, trying to figure out why something isn't working.

If you don't have VERY solid Wi-Fi coverage from your home router or Access Point, adding the WIU or WTIU to your home network won't go well. At least, not in my experience.

OTOH - Having your smart device connect directly to the WIU/WTIU can result in similar problems when the phone hunts for an internet enabled connection. One way to prevent that is to have a device dedicated for use with a stand-alone WIU/WTIU that has no other Wi-Fi or Cellular connections stored in it.

I ended up going back to my old Android 7" tablet, and amazingly the issues went away.  I had one time during the 20 minutes we ran trains that I had to refresh the engines and that was in the beginning when I was added the engines back into the list.  Other than that there were no issues.  A much more enjoyable and less frustrating time.

So, I don't know why but for whatever reason, it seems as though older model devices work better with the WIU's.  Whatever the reason, I wish someone would correct the connectivity issues.
