Bud, the brushplate might be worn where the armature goes through the plate. The bushing on the bottom of the armature could be worn, or, like Gandy said, the impeller might be scraping on the whistle housing. Sometimes when the relay is not correctly adjusted or cleaned it vibrates also. You could take the shell off and try the whistle and see where the noise is coming from. While the shell is off, put a drop of oil on the bottom of the armature where it goes into the housing. Keep us posted.

If you have a high pitch squeal its likely the brush plate. If its growling or grinding noise its the armature bearings in the case or the fan hitting the case. Also look for the ball bearing in the brass bushing where the fan shaft ends on the outside. If you slightly depress the fan blades the ball bearing will drop down slightly so you can run some oil into there. If the fan is actually hitting anything I highly advise that you do not fool with it. Those blades will snap right off.
