Good morning everybody,

I was running my new MTH Imperial Pennsy M1A (MTH Part # 30-1580-1) last night and as it came by were I was standing I heard an unusual noise.

I am running the engine with DCS System.

As the engine passed by I turned down the engine volume to 0 and listen to the engine.

The unusual noise is coming from the front of the engine.

I turned off the smoke unit and the noise stops.

With the engine sounds set at 100% you can still here the noise coming from the smoke unit.

If the engine is sitting in neutral with the smoke unit in the "on" position you can hear the smoke unit running which has a how to say it "buzzing noise".

When the engine is traveling (forward or reverse, 2 scale mph up to 35 scale mph (max engine speed set in the remote) the only time the noise is heard is when the smoke unit emits smoke out the stack.

I did notice that when the engine is running 20 to 25 scale mph occasionally it will stop puffing smoke just for a few seconds and then again start puffing smoke as normal.

When this occurs the engine will travel about 26" to 28" and will repeat this process of no smoke just for a few seconds.

At lower speeds this situation of absence of smoke is not noticeable.

When the engine is running or in neutral the smoke output seems to be normal, but when you compare this engine to my older steam engines that are PS2 equipped, you could put a dropper full of smoke fluid in the stack and the engine will start putting smoke out the stack immediately.

With this engine along with my other PS3 equipped engines you have to be careful how much smoke fluid you put into the stack or the smoke unit will  act like it is smothered out and will not put smoke out the stack.

Sometimes the smoke will start coming out from under the engine shell which in the right condition is a nice effect.

Blow into the stack lightly and then the smoke will come up the stack instead of out from underneath the shell.

Any thoughts????

I'd suspect that the impeller is hitting the top of the smoke unit if it's a buzzing noise.

Having to blow momentarily in the stack is a normal thing with many smoke units, you're just breaking up any bubble that is blocking smoke flow.  Whenever I add smoke fluid, I give a "puff" down the stack to insure the bubble hasn't formed in the "fueling" process.

Hopefully, you have a good LHS that has service so you don't have to ship this back to MTH.

Hello Triple G,

The smoke unit was making the noise when I moved the engine from the engine shed where it was parked to my program track, approximately 24"

After the reset the noise was gone. Coincidence????

This maybe one of those mystery thing like how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop ??

The world may never know !!!!

I will have some time this weekend to operate the engine I will let you know if anything different shows up.

Good evening Gunrunnerjohn, I had a chance to operate the MTH M1A Imperial steam engine with the noisy smoke unit over the weekend on my layout.

There is still a slight noise from the smoke unit which I think is normal and can be expected since it is a small motor.

Not sure what was going on here but it appears and sounds that the mystery sound has fixed itself.

Have not tried the engine in a Lashup again, just ran out of time over the weekend.

Thought I would give you an update.

Thanks again for your help.
