I am at a quandary...

My layout in planning has O-36 Switches and curves I initially ordered the 6-38961 #1846 PRR NSHS and the 6-38962 Non-Powered.

The Volume 2 2012 Catalog states 17' length and O-54 Minimum Curve for the PRR NSHS.

I have re-ordered the SD80MACS PRR 6-38728 as it states it will run on the O-36 as a minimum Curve but it is 2 1/2 inches longer at 19 1/2 inches but still runs on the O-36???

Since I have already purchased a good deal of fast track and switches, I would rather not have to get rid of it.

Is there any chance it is an error in the magazine?

Has Lionel made errors like this in the catalogs before? and that the PRR HSHS would actually run on the O-36 curves and switches?

Both engines seem to have similar features and as my first Legacy Engine, I want this purchase to go as smoothly as possible.

Is there someone who knows the real specs and can confirm either way? (I hate to ask Mike R. to find out as I know he is usually up to his xxx in alligators and has enough to deal with.

The SD80 has a shallow fuel tank and swinging pilots attached to the trucks. I havent seen one up close, but Im sure it either has a blind axle, a swivel axle or accomodation for lateral motion in one of the axles.

The ES44 had better not be 17" or they're going to have problems. It should be around 19", and from the looks of the catalog art, they're using the existing ES44 underframe from the vision line/diecast ES44 model, with a newly tooled, NS accurate plastic shell.

The vision underframe has a full depth fuel tank (so it wont clear small radius switches) and also has the independent pilot. The combination of those 2 features are what makes it an O54 locomotive.

Dennis,

Another option might be the MTH Railking Imperial heritage model.  While somewhat smaller than a scale locomotive it is advertised as running O-31 curves and should be a good approximation of the real thing.

I'm still looking forward to Lionel announcing the scale Reading heritage unit.  I'm squirreling my nickles away until it is announced.

Jim
