Norscot 55004 1:50 scale CAT 5080 Front Shovel (Excavator)

This is a very nicely detailed diecast model of the CAT 5080 excavator.  The model was produced by Norscot Group, Inc. Built in 1998. The model has a movable scoop as shown. This model could be used as a heavy mining or excavation construction vehicle for O scale layouts. The massive size of this shovel would require the use of a heavy duty depressed center flatcar for transportation due to the requirement for overhead clearance. This excavator would require at least a 32 foot flatcar bed for transportation over the rails.  The excavator also requires special handling as a "wide load".

The Norscot model 55004 produced in 1998 is identical to Ertl model 2676 which was produced in 1997.  The Ertl model also had rubber tracks.

Prototype photos are also shown.

The Norscot model is very similar to the Ertl model shown here.

The Ertl model has more details and metal track.

Pro hobby,

I also collect Caterpillar die-cast models. Working for Caterpillar, I am not sure if Caterpillar (not the model importer) pays & hence owns the tooling for these models as with other Caterpillar machine & engine parts suppliers. If Caterpillar owned the tooling it is possible that Norscot got access to the Ertl tooling when they got the license.

But these are just my observations based on the models I have owned.

Thanks,

Naveen Rajan
