Took my trolley apart to put grease in the gear box.  I broke one of the field wires by

accident and had to re-solder it  to the contact plate.  I have never paid attention as to how the trolley

reverses, but looking at the wiring I became puzzled.  Are the two wires

around the field wrapped in different directions, right to left, left to right(or front to back and vice versa).  And is this

how the current direction changes and causes the armature to reverse?

Thanks for the picture Jim.  The reason I am puzzled is that both field wires look the same when I see them wrapped around the plastic on the metal horseshoe.  But they(the wires) must be wrapped differently on the plastic thingy in order for the direction to change when the slider moves.  Am I correct in my thinking?

As far as I know, both wires are wound together in the same direction. But "Left" wire from one is joined with the "right" wire from the other, and attached to one of the brushes. The remaining wires go to the contact plate.

Perhaps it would be better to say "the beginning of one wire is joined to the end of the other wire, and soldered to one of the brushes".
