I am new to the NYC.  It looks like the F units with the lightning stripe had different color layouts.  Were the freight units black with a gray lightnng stripe and the dual purpose or passengers units a dark gray with a lighter gray stripe.  I s ther a simple summery?  Hard to determine colors from imternet pictures.  If it makes a difference, I am interested in late 1940's to 1950.

Thanks

I can help...

Yes, early FTs & F2s were delivered in a simple black with white whisker paint scheme.  These were freight units.

After that, the short lighting stripe showed up, for both the black with gray freight units, and the two tone dark gray with light gray for the “combination” F units, as they called them.

The last light lightning stripes were full length version of the same paint schemes, as mentioned above.

thank you very much for the information.  The ones I am looking at are black with full lenght lighting stripe.  If I am running just two units, was A-A or A-B more the rule or about equal?

Check your email, there should be hours of research that I've sent you a link to.  This should give you a pretty good idea of how the Central ran their F units, and for the most part, it was all hands on deck.

Thanks!
