Hi Everyone

My wife picked up a MTH NYC freight set for me how cool.  The engine number is 5405 I believe it has a QSI sound system with electronic whistle, optionally equipped with passenger sounds squealing brakes and proto-smoke. I removed the tender shell and it has no back up battery it has a QSI  double stacked board set (Whistle sound-A  96-7-31 on the PCB) it runs but takes off to full speed and the smoke unit just blows constantly and no bell. I'm just wondering if this is normal for this system, and what options might I have with the current system. Or should I upgrade to PS-2. Transformer wise I have a ZW,LW and MTH 750 and a MTH IF remote.

Thank you all for the fantastic information on this site.

Hi John

Thanks for the info, I found out later that the runaway was isolated to the MTH Z-750 controller (I will see whats going on with that at a later date. The brick with the IR remote control no runaway naturally. One more thing John is it normal for this engine to have the smoke unit fan running all the time. If so what would be my best bet in your opinion to get synchronized smoke and a bell, like my MTH K-4 pacific Proto 2.0, its the 5 volt system, I do like how it operates and sounds, with my current transformers.

Thanks again                                                                                                                                                      Joe

Thanks for confirming that Pat, I'm going to see if I can find a Proto 2 board set preferably a 3 volt but even the 5 volt system I have in my other MTH steam engine is all I'm looking for at this time, I definitely like the synchronized smoke, whistle, bell and sounds it has. I need to search the site and find out what other options would match up with my 5 volt system, I may wind up going for a proto 3 upgrade then I could put the old system from the Pacific in the Hudson!
