Does anyone make or has someone in the past made a model of a crawler crane in "O"? I'd like to find a 30's - 40's era crane with clamshell to simulate how NY&LB provided coal at the Bay Head yard many decades ago. Looking for something in plastic or maybe wood? Thanks for any responses.

You may have to go die cast 1:50 scale. The only track crane I am aware are the Lionel kits but it's a steam shovel.
Trainmstr... check out Model Tech Studios LLC. They have a lot of industrial side equipment in O scale, including a 30 tn capacity clam shell crane and others. They have a lot of detail and accessories at reasonable prices, items made of plastic and other cast materials. The variety of scale 1/48 items they have in amazing.
Steamwolf..... thanks for the link to the CCM site. I found some models of Manitowoc lift cranes I have been looking for. Other sites I looked at did not have any available. Thank you, sir......

There is a big selection in the 1:50 scale die cast. It can get pricey, but there is some awesome models out there
For those looking for a more detailed Bucyrus Steam Shovel, rail road track travel, and in O scale..... ToyTrucker.com and search for the Bucyrus Steam Shovel. I purchased one years ago, it is amazing and sooooo detailed! The web site says they are still available.

Is this the steam shovel that Peterson sold many years ago?

Yeah, no worries. I just plugged "1:48 crawler crane" into google images and picked the first interesting thing.
...This search lead to about 3 hours on Youtube watching old power shovels do their thing... so I'm thankful for that!
Great topic. My grandfather sometimes documented his bridge building days with an old Brownie camera. He captured some of the Job site equipment over his career from the 30s to the 60s. I plan to incorporate similar into my layout.

Check,Buffalo Road Imports,DHS Diecast. I collect lattice boom cranes mainly late 50s 60s.
JSTRAW124... Great pictures !!! Thanks for saving these, they are a treasure many would not understand. I worked for years on the docks on the Houston Ship Channel as a stevedore and we sometimes utilized "Big John" to make heavy lifts on barges. "Big John" was a 500 ton fixed lift barge mounted crane moved around by it's own designated tugs. We had Manitowoc rigs for load and off-load from dock side ( 3900, 4000W and a 4100W) on the West Indies Shipping dock in Jacinto Port. We shipped massive amounts of refinery, construction and other oil related materials and equipment to ports all over the world. Some were load and off-load by way of roll-on / roll-off with ships that had bows that raised open and ramps on bow and sterns. For barges we had to utilize "Big John" for this when it was out of lift radius for our Manitowoc rigs. In later years I worked same type cranes as an iron worker and operator building refineries and chemical plants.
Again, thanks for some great pics, and for sharing.

Richard, I don't know if it is same as Peterson sold, I purchased mine direct from Toy Trucker in 2007. I also purchased a great, very detailed scraper at the time. It is also 1/48 scale and for the price is a bargain very hard to match anywhere for the same quality.
