can i run a steamer on 048 curves rather than o54 curves will it run ok,thinking about spending big bucks so i want to make sure, thanks

It depends on what steamer it is. Secondly the minimum curve radius suggested for any piece of equipment means the piece will not derail. However, the appearance is still compromised because the piece will not be centered over the rails as in real life. The bigger the curve the better--in both operation and appearance!
No personal experience but my brother is running his Legacy Blue Comet and heavy weight passenger cars, which the minimum curve requirement is 054, on 048 curve fastrack without problems.
Lightning, there should be specs from the manufacturer (Lionel, MTH...) that show minimum curve required for their large steamers.
In addition if you post here what you are considering there will probably be multiple forum members who can help answer your question.

I have the Blue Comet and the passenger cars will run on Atlas O-48 although they look a little strange there. The loco is rated O-36 though (and actually does run very well on Atlas 36, too) but the cars go no tighter curve that 48.
I have the Legacy N&W J and it is rated for O-54 and it will not run on my Atlas O-48. I tried a couple of times and it makes it for fifty feet or so around the layout but it's never made a complete circuit.
