I have a mystery to me on my layout.  I have a short new section of track, Gargraves, that most of the time carries voltage well, but every once in a while it will go dead and the train stops right after the center roller gets past the rail joiners to the new section.  What could cause this?  thanks in advance for any advice.

Unless the track is a spur, both ends of the track should be powered.  Does the train regain power after passing over the section of track?

I don't have GarGraves track, but if the center rail is blackened and you are sure the center rail is clean, I would try removing some of the blackening and see if the track still appears dead.  Try checking the resistance of the center rail by checking the ohms with probes on top of the rail on either end of the center rail.
