Just bought a NOS 8600 Lionel engine. I was breaking it in the other night; not knowing for sure if it used pills or smoke fluid; I filled it up with fluid and cranked it up. The smoke was pouring out of it; then the heater element got really red hot and then flames. No damage to the engine ,but the smoke unit is toast. Should I have used smoke pills? I know this was a 2046 from the Lionel company, renumbered 8600 for MPC.

You're not the only one with an 8600 whose smoke unit went into afterburner, look at the glow from this guy's stack, this resistor is about to burn out like yours did...

You were correct to use smoke fluid, the resistor simply failed and ignited the fluid. You just need to replace the smoke resistor and whatever other parts got toasted by the fire - probably the cap, felt gasket, and the fiberglass wick/pad that the resistor sits on when it's put back together. All of the necessary parts are available from any good parts supplier.
