My local shop has the following for sale, price unknown but very reasonable....All items are in a Marx box lettered for#8996 NS.   With the following contents:black tin steamer, 0-4-0 type, it has a DC can motor up front driving the lead axle, no provision for side rods, a manual reverse, no center rail pick up shoe.  Black sguare NYC tender,  a blue #554 General coal hopper,  a silver #553 ATSF tank car,  a beige #555 refeer for Colorado Southern,  a red NYC #556 caboose with one end having a railing and end ladder,  a dual lite search lite car, with black base and a copper top where the lights mount, no lettering, has a sliding shoe pick up,  a small black transformer for AC only, shows 7-13 volts.  All cars are in excellent or better condition with no signs of rust and only a slight bit of paint loss,  all are 4 wheel cars with hook couplers.  None of the cars shoe any manufacture labels and no lettering on engine.  Whould any one hazard a guess on what we have here, I am thinking pre-war Marx.\\

Thanks,  Marty

Yes, there is a wire clip in the cab that retains the two D cell batteries for power.  I can't confirm the contents of the rest of the set, but the locomotive doesn't belong with the box #.  Greenberg's price guide says that set numbers from 8990 - 8999 should have an 898.  I suspect the rest of the set is fairly complete (although I'll let our more knowledgeable members confirm that), just with the wrong locomotive.  I won't hazard a guess on the rest of the set (except that it is older than the engine), but the loco would date from somewhere in the 50's.  Hopefully someone else can give you some more information on the rest of the set.
