For a few years I have used my DCS system with the loop under the Christmas Tree. However, I am now buidling a permanent layout and will use it in the new train room. If I pick up another TIU can I use the same remote for both 'layouts', or Should I buy a full second DCS system? Thanks!

Chuck,
Yes, you can use the same remote for both layouts. You can even leave both TIUs as #1 as long as you don't have both powered up at the same time.
Chuck:
Barry is correct, of course.
You might want to consider the additional flexibility you would gain by having 2 remotes. Additionally, the full DCS system represents a discount from the price of the TIU and handheld when purchased separately. I've found it's often worthwhile to have "extra" handhelds around and I bet Barry would agree with that.

You'd win that bet!
If you do have both TIU's powered up and set to TIU #1, things get very confused!
My test bench has a TIU, and it apparently can be powered partially just with the USB connection. The transformer was off, but the laptop was still on, I couldn't figure out what was going on!
Thanks guys. You've helped a lot.
I have 2 layouts in the basement. 2 TIUs set at 1. 1 remote. I have run both layouts at the same time with no problems. Have never added an engine with both TIUs powered.
The layouts are of different gauges so no trains are interchanged.
I think I should be running in Super mode but it works so why change it.
I now have a question. If I bring a engine and my remote to a friends house with the engine loaded into my remote and everything set at TIU 1 will my engine run on a different layout with a different TIU than the engine was originally loaded.
I'm impressed that all works well Jim, of course I was adding engines when the two TIU's were dueling it out, not a pretty sight. It was sneaky, as only the USB was powering the TIU RF section, the actual transformer was off.

Yes you can. Both tiu need to be set to tiu#1 You may have an engine ID conflict if the friend has an engine with the same ID number as yours .( just take his off the track) you probably don't want to get into changing IDs etc.
