I have a proto2 MTH E6 Atlantic that need to have the speaker replaced. Are there any other options for speakers that might give better sound output than the MTH speaker? Has anyone ever put one of the Lionel Fat Boy speakers into an MTH? Did it fit, did it improve sound?

There is a fatboy type speaker with 4 ohms that improves the sound. They were on blow out last year for just around a buck a piece! I usually order from Madison sound now.
It does matter what type of PS2 board is in the engine. 5 volt PS2 uses a 16 ohm. 3 volt PS2 uses a 4 ohm. You could put a 8 ohm speaker in the boiler and a 8 ohm speaker in the tender wired in parallel for the 3 volt system.
You can get the Lionel Fat Boys in different ohms. I put one in my PS2 GS4, and used a Lionel enclosure. HUGE sound improvement!
As long as the ohm and wattage is close you shouldn't have an issue.
Before you jump into the project, check the room available in the tender. This is an E6 Atlantic, not a whole lot of room to increase the height of the speaker.

There are also other types/shapes of speakers, such as those they use in computers or Jawbones.
My jawbones have no speakers, did yours get installed later?
No, they came with the Jawbone.
