Interesting.  At one time, homes were wired with cloth and camber insulated wire. More commonly called knob and tube wiring. Note that there were porcelain insulators and tubes/sleeves where the wire was routed through a framing member or attach to a ceiling joist.  Weak point, over time, was the heat generated, from a light fixture, and the motion of plugging/unplugging a receptacle. Even some of the early cable assembly/romex type wire, still used cloth and camber insulation.  Thermoplastic, and eventually higher heat resistant thermoplastic, are used today for wiring.  The look is fine, if used over modern, ambient, 90 degree C, insulated copper wiring.  IMO.  Mike CT.
