Has any manufacturer made a semi-scale version of the Pennsy P5a modified ? For that matter, what about a P5 box cab in semi-scale ?

Semi scale? Don’t think so. MTH made a very nice premier one.
Sunset / 3rd Rail made accurate scale versions of both the box cab and the P5A center cab in 2 and 3 rail. Not sure what you mean by semi-scale.

Plus, the accurate scale models are not really all that big anyway, being a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement.
In fact, the scale P5a modified is almost exactly the same size as the familiar "semi-scale" traditional GG1.

MTH's P5a will do O-48.
Not sure why, but I picked up a bare MTH P5A shell, like above, recently.. The intent is to fabricate a tinplate ish drive for it.... we'll see. It is a nice casting though. No zincpest on mine either.
I have a Sunset P5 boxcab and it is not happy with 054. It really needs 072. It has to do with interference with the steps on the 4 wheel truck.

MTH has two versions of the P5A boxcab. One is rated for O54. The other is O72.
Mine is a turd. It requires perfect trackwork. Two motors on a solid frame with one using DCS and the other not makes tracking and pulling issues.

Try removing the springs from the four wheel trucks. If that fails, move the tach reader to the motor that drives the two axles.
John is correct, moving the tach reader to the other motor makes it a totally different locomotive. Why they decided to put the tach on the motor they did totally escapes me.
