First time setting up my MTH P5a proto2. On start up smoked came out the bottom of engine I turned system off On restart the engine moved forward as normal then stopped. Now the controller says engine not on track So I assume some component is fried, but why? when I open the engine up everything looks normal, no signs of anything burnt

Is this the PS-2 5V version has the 8.4V battery that looks like a 9V? Those boards are susceptible to failure at their age. G
So the main board needs to be placed? If so what's the cost?
First, you need to determine which PS2 board you have. 3v or 5v. 5v uses a 9v style battery, 3v uses a double AA or AAA battery pack. Then, purchase the appropriate PS3/2 stacker board ($180), plus programming fee (if you don’t have the capability to program the board), hardware kit and speaker (if replacing a 5v board), plus shipping. In some cases, the wiring harness may need to be extended. Service centers charge about $300 to upgrade this loco.
If it is a PS-2 3V board it may be repairable at component level cheaper than replacement. I do repairs if you need a tech. Email in profile. G
IT's a 5 v system You said you could repair it. How do I contact you for that
